Allin Cycles of Croydon 80s Red Road Bike

Posted on
  • I have had it in mind to one day build a geared bike after having built 3 fixed rides.

So I now have an Allin of Croydon road bike to try building up. I was told it's an 80s frame and I love the way it looks so this should be fun. Was also told it's Reynolds 531 which is of course, awesome.

It came with a seat post I will get rid of and a Tange BB and headset.

Pictures below posed with a couple of track front wheels and some odd bits from the parts box.

Nitto B 105 handle bars which should be appropriate and a Nitto Jaguar Chrome NJS track stem, which is less so. However it does look kinda cool. Also have some black toshi leather bar tape laying around unused. The saddle will be a Black Turbo or Brooks B17N. Tyres will be Maxxis Refuse.

So the next questions for me are - 80s style groupset or something more modern? - and where to get some wheels that are nice but not pricey.

Any comments on the geometry appreciated or stories about Allins you have known.

  • Cool frame, really liking the fork crown. It's been repainted I assume? Don't know anything about Allin I'm afraid. Unless you mean G.G. Allin.

    got a stan butler special ( 531c nervex lugs ) beater from 1950's / 60's
lovely frame no original forks sadly
used it as a commuter for 2 years

  • whats the rear spacing? I suppose a modern groupo could be tricky in that respect?

  • Nah, spacing 126 (if that's what it is) to 130 isn't a big problem. Frame does take modern brakes. So that's also not a problem, you'll be fine. I'd say Veloce 10 speed in silver or Athena 11 in silver if you want to spent a little more.

  • It has been repainted which is why there are no decals. Only got the seller's word for it being an Allin, however there is a number on the side of the BB starting with A.

  • Thanks for the advice on the groupset. I'll check the spacing.

  • Make sure you don't go so modern that none of it is silver-coloured. How about a nice 9 speed Chorus!

  • Hey skully. Thanks for the advice. I agree all silver will be nice.

  • I think I'll add some notes to this thread with things I am considering...starting with wheels

The kinoko H PLUS SON TB14 TO ZENITH ROAD WHEELSET. I know a bit about H Plus Son but not heard of Zenith.

Hmm, but I don't need quick release, that just saves carrying a spanner but adds a flappy bit of metal to your bike.

  • Starting to look into some options now for the group.
If I go for something new there is the campagnolo veloce groupset 2014 10 speed silver for about £340. Still need to research which crank length and gearing to go for. But no doubt there is loads out there to read about this.

I just need to cover my 7 mile commute including the big hill at Archway. I might find myself riding up ditchling beacon or box hill at weekends. I'll see how it goes.

  • Took the seat post out. No trouble there except I think they left a 26mm in whereas I'm hoping it's 27.2mm. B

BB has been freshly greased. All good aside from perhaps a missing bearing.

Measured the seat tube for when I need to buy a band on front mech. Inside tubes all look clean and rust free. So far so good.

  • I'm going for a new silver Campagnolo Veloce groupset. I'm looking for a place to buy flat backed cable stops to replace the down tube shifters.

  • Hi pipwash, if your frame is a genuine Allin then it will have a number stamped on the rear near side dropout. I have 4 Allins at the moment and know fairly accurate ages for all of them - one I still have the original purchase receipt from 1981. If you tell me the number I can try and date your frame a bit more accurately. Also, I have a workshop full of vintage bike bits from 40s to 90s which I am looking to get rid of. Let me know anything your after and I'll see if I've got it. Cheers

  • sorry, pipwish. Bloody autocorrect

  • Hey user55733. What's your best guess on age of an Allin SB standard frame s/n 2353?

    Brad

  • Hi Brad, only just come back to this thread. I have one with number 2405 which my dad had built in July 1981 so yours is probably couple of years before that. 2405 was the last frame built by Peter Cobb as I remember my dad persuading him to build just one more for him! Yours is almost certainly also a Peter Cobb frame. Hope that helps
