Shooting from the hip (no firsthand experience): the brake track on both your rims is unaffected and the last photo shows that the step is "normal", so I'm going with...

Many thanks for the reply. Can't argue with that... Rims are okay draws First Blood!
It'd be great if they are okay. Built by Paul Hewitt and been great, super solid wheels, rarely need truing. Be a shame to split. I sadly need cash and fixed bikes are both more vintage affairs right now.

A reputable builder like Hewitt isn't going to use shonky rims and the step clearly hasn't developed since they were built.
Doesn't speak well of Mavic mind...

Agree on the Mavic comment. The 'safety' stickers on my ones completely covered the join. Took them off a while back and was surprised by the machining. Not something I'm clued up on, and seems standard to Open Pros, but does strike me as a bit ugly. The finish of TB14s I have is much better, though the walls seem to be wearing more quickly. That might be down to type of brake blocks and winter riding I guess.

Though you may wish to consider visiting the wheel balancing thread
:-)
I have a set of Phil Wood / Open Pro wheels up for sale and trying to solicit opinions if the rim join is damaged or not. I'd rather not sell someone complete wheels if rim or rims are damaged, but would be a shame to disassemble a well built set unnecessarily. So good to hear what people think.
There is no wear or anything untoward on the rim wall where the join is, only on the top section where the rims show machining and have a visible 'step' down from new. Best description would be that it looks like a deformity or a squish to the machining, but is uglier than if compared to a new rim. Primarily the front, rear rim looks okay. I've ridden them with the stickers off for at least a year and I've seen no change or cracks propagate or anything.
Photos are attached. Also, the best image of a new rim I could fine to show the 'step' down I mean on the Open Pros at the join.
Many thank for any help. Much appreciated.
