ZIPP 188 V8 11 speed hub on 404 firecrest

  • I am currently servicing the above hub and no matter what I do I cannot get the preload adjustment correct to eliminate the play in the wheel. I understand zipps are quite soft and there will be a certain amount of flex in the rim but this is lateral play in the hub.

The non drive side has a preload cap with a small grub screw that can be adjusted while the wheel is in the dropouts to achieve optimal tension so that the wheel spins freely.

All parts are clean and I have replaced the bearings in the hub. Anyone have any experience?

  • Yep. I've replaced the Zipp 188 in my 404s, and I'm about to do the same with my 808s. There's lateral play due (I think) to the axle being undersized, and if you tighten up the collet to remove any play then the freehub drags. I remember one person on a forum somewhere used some nail varnish to increase the diameter of the axle slightly where the bearings go, but that seemed like a bit of a bodge...

  • Thanks Dan. It's driving me mad and looks shit that I can't get them right. What did you replace them with?

  • Tune Mag170 on the 404s, and the 808s are getting a Hope Pro3. I think the 202s should be OK, as they've got the V9 hub, not sure what to do about the 303s.

  • Nice collection. Really not sure what else to try. if it was my wheel i'd go for the nail varnish. People say pack it with grease but the grease gets rubbed off when inserting the axle.
