The 205 rallye was a 1.3 2valve per cyclinder 100bhp 7k reving car while the 106 developed a bit less power from a similar 1.3 engine. Didn't the later rallye have a 1.6 engine similar bhp but peak torque was around 3 while peak torque was around 5 on the 1.3
Rally cars are different to race cars as rally cars need suspension travel to cope with the terrain and from experience shorter gearing as rally cars spend less time going on a straight line.

When I got my 205 1.9 GTi aged 20 I was aware of this reputation, but figured it couldn't possibly be as bad as people said so went barrelling into a roundabout, done a big lift and ended up sitting on the grass in the middle of the roundabout. Fun it was.
I've always fancied a 106 Rallye. I'm sure I remember the 1.3 being the one to have over the 1.6 but I can't remember why.
