  • Ref made in China - nothing wrong with RAPHA quality MADE IN CHINA - and I don't have a choice in which computer I use. Nope - it's just that I'd like my investment in a purchase to find it's way into the UK economy more directly rather than via the bank account of wealthy Chinese investors buying property. Similarly I'd like the steel that goes into the buildings that are the offices and houses where I live to be made in the UK too. But evidently that's a lost cause as well.

  • Rapha Imperial Works is all handmade by only British-born children that can trace their lineage back to Ethelred, with only a smattering of muggle interbreeding.

  • Am I alone in this? I opened an (rare for me) on-line purchase from Rapha - a merino wool top - and was disappointed to find a Made in China label inside. Doesn't seem right somehow. On many levels. Anyway it's going back.

Genuine question; what are you going to go for instead?

  • Absolutely agree. It's not racist to want the money you spend to go into the local economy. It's not racist to want to support British craftsmanship. It's not racist to want the money you spend to reach companies who pay tax in the UK. It's not racist to think that manufacturing all of our physical goods somewhere 5000 miles away isn't the most sustainable approach. It's not racist to want to buy clothes made in a country where standards of health and safety in the production process are guaranteed.

It's also not racist to expect your clothes to be made somewhere where production costs are higher given the amount Rapha charge. The reduced cost of manufacturing in China sure isn't being passed on to the consumer...

All that said, were Rapha merino things ever made in Britain? I don't think so.
