Yep, all frame dependent. I'm looking into this at the mo too. For example the on one parkwood 29er is sold as both a 29er and 27+ on the same frame. Compare that to the 29er titus el guapo (also basically an on one) and you've got no chance getting any thing plus sized between the chainstays.
Need to get a measuring tape out...

It's easy to design a frame to take both, but that's very different from trying to stuff fat tyres into something that was never designed for them

Yep, you are certainly right to a degree, however I know the on one parkwood has been out a few years, and the 27+ version is a new addition to their range. 29ers with big clearances can squeeze the full 3.0 tyres, but generally better to get one designed for the job.
Then your problem is that a lot of new 27+ frames will be using the new 148 boost spacing and therefore awkward for swapping wheelsets.

Have to get out of London generally for any decent riding. Half decent XC in Epping outside of eternal bog season from what I hear. Also, the XC trails at the Olympic Park in Lee Valley are O.K. if you can't get out of the city.

@BareNecessities organises a good few rides to Epping and such, so have a lookout for his threads. I do some in the Surrey Hills. Might do one for February.

It'll be good as new again in the Spring :-)

I'll be back then in that case. :-D

Rear wheel is 1309g. Not bad. I built a standard 26" MTB rear wheel (Sun Ringle S-Type ETX downhill rim with a Novatex GCC hub) the other day that was heavier than that. :-D

Yeah i'm quite impressed. if I had a bike that took those wheels, i'd try them I think.

Give it ten years 26" will be back in.
The marketing guys will be like: "Yeah, the nimbleness of the original MTB wheel size means that you can turn on a pin. They accelerate faster than a 27.5 or 29er, are stronger as a result of their more compact compressive arch, are lighter, and their steeper contact angle means that jumps are easier to take.
Tight, steep downhill switchbacks are a doddle on a 26er and their decreased tyre contact patch means that drifting in turns is more easily achievable!
Why go bigger and more stable when you can have so much more fun on 559?":-D

Sadly, there will be something that stops it being compatible with current 26" stuff.

something
I've just become annoyed with 'Boost' hubs again >:(

I'm building a nice 26er.
Which is probably proof positive that it's a dead and past it format.
-
• #4841
I designed myself a 24" wheeled bike, just for lols.
-
• #4842
Could you even ride that?
The full sus airnimal was top of my list for a while.
My 26er will have slight enduro tendencies. So it's a bit 'on trend'.
-
• #4843
this .559. sounds amazing. where can get one?!?
-
• #4844
Could you even ride that?
Add a slightly longer than average seatpost and I've got something similar to my XC position ;-)
-
• #4845
Just don't point it up hill. You'll be wheeling up the entire climb.
Thinking of going 50mm stem/ 730mm bars on the xc/am bike. But worried it'll climb like Shit. Might compromise somewhat with a 60mm/710mm set up.

what are peoples thoughts on jeff jones bikes? specifically the steel diamond frame with truss forks?
-
• #4847
I think they look amazing, know a guy who rides a diamond with truss (all steel) and he loves it. If I could afford one, I'd probably have one.

£1200 is a fairly large amount of money isn't it. but at least I could swap the vast majority of parts from my Ogre.
I don't know why I'm saying any of this really, I've got no chance of buying one. My (fiscally) better half wouldn't let me.

Some dry trails would be very welcome.

559: Illuminati: the New Wheel Order:
http://forums.mtbr.com/26/~559-illuminati-new-wheel-order~-958979.html
:-)
The diameter should, the width probably won't. Not only because a typical 29er is designed for 2.3-2.5 tyre clearance, but because the space for the maximum tyre width will be placed at a greater diameter in a niner than on a true 27.5+ frame, so any bends or indents in the chainstay (usually the tightest spot) will be in the wrong place.
