Some airlines are still fussy and will class it as sporting equipment, even though it is no different to a standard suitcase. Only an issue at the check-in desk though so if it doesn't look like a bike bag then no-one will know.
Worth considering where you'll be flying, who you're flying with. Some airlines give a free extra bag for sporting equipment , Virgin for instance http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/gb/en/travel-information/baggage/sports-equipment.html

Some help deciding on bike suitcases for air travel.
Am I right in saying that if you pack your bike in a case within the airlines dimensions and weight allowance, that you can check it in as a regular suitcase?
Following on from that. Anyone with a scicon aerocomfort case, how well are the bars protected?
