there also seems to be some weird white stuff (thin worm like lines) under the clear coat, is that common in alloy frames?
-

@frankohara I ran Crud RoadRacers with 25c tyres and it was too tight, the smallest bump and there was rubbing. 23c tyres may illuminate rubbage?

Or PDW guards, designed to work without the usual fittings.
-
• #31
Yes - it's oxidisation under the clearcoat.
-
• #32
Quite weird as it is more visible in places like the rear bridge but online a thin "line" in others... Does this compromise the structural integrity of the frame? Shall it be treated?
-
• #33
Needs no treatment. Aesthetic only.

After sourcing some more parts from the forum, a couple of ebay bargains and forking out for some new Omniums from bike24 (great service IMHO) and a quick trip to the lbs (to remove old bb) bike is almost ready!

Very happy so far, a very light, comfy and fast frame

Left hand lever's cable is already under the bar tape waiting for a cable doubler 2:1 so front brake can be operated with both levers. Hopefully I left enough cable :S
Still looking for Problem Solvers Cable Doubler 2:1 if someone has a 'spare' one I would happily give it a new home!

Clean build, why not put the break at the rear as well if the hole and the lever are there? Will cost less then a problem solver for sure :)
-
• #38
That's true! =) I've thought about it but somehow don't like the idea of a cable running along the top tube and there is something slightly odd about fixed+2ndbrake...
-
• #39
If there are cable guides for a rear brake I think it makes sense.
Fixed with a rear brake is better ime and aesthetically it's no different to a road bike - you've already got two brake levers.

Not a bad idea, but tbh I am more worried about finding long mudguards to keep my feet dry and bb safe (most probably will need replace 25 gators for 23 tyres before there is enough clearance). Fitting a second brake is not really a priority at this moment

Current winter set up.

Raceblades are ok for some drizzle but not really the best solution for winter commuting!
Changing the current 25c gators for something 23c will leave some clearance but still we would not have much space. Would PDW with Pclips fit? Any other (cost effective) ideas to get full long mudguards on this?
-
• #43
Hard to see exactly, but wouldn't you get a bit more clearance by adding a linked or a half link to the chain and moving the rear wheel back?
-
• #44
Looking really nice.

• #45
Nice build indeed. How much have you spend on it @frankohara?
-
• #46
thanks man! mostly successful thanks to your help and inspiration for your build

I was trying to not make the numbers as it is probably way more that I originally planned (I promised gf and myself that I would just use parts from the Kagero and spend close to nothing) Total is slightly over 7hundred, not cheap but very happy with the result!!
could have been less if I did not go for new cranks and a bloody expensive bar tape :D
Does it have somewhere at the BB to take a guard, as that's going to be the other issue for mounting them. If you can find any PDW guards they would work even if not however.
Also, isn't the black rain 378 or something a-c, as opposed to the original 367 or so?
