  • How do you lock the screen on 1000?

  • Ah you need to hold power button.

  • And you can't lock the screen or unlock it while an activity is running, for no particularly good reason that I can see.

  • What's an 'Activity'? I just walked down the street with it recording and locked the screen while it was running, just as I would on the 800s (with a power button hold rather than power button push).

  • Hhmmm. That doesn't work on mine. If I've pressed start (so an activity is being recorded into the activities folder) then it won't let me lock or unlock the screen. I'll have to see if my firmware needs updating.

  • I just walked down the street with it recording

    Has it broken yet?

    #garmin

  • Mine is brand new, no firmware updates yet. Version 5.10

YOu sure you're not just pressing the button? You need to hold it down for two beeps.

Then there's a grey Lock Screen at the top to press and it says "Activity in progress.. Stop the timer.. blah blah".

  • I notice the Edge 1000 already has maps on it. Are they just for the UK? Will I need to install my own maps again for the US? City Navigator I presume? Or their Topo ones? Not Edge 1000 specific maps or anything?

  • Not yet. But it's got a micro USB instead of mini which annoys me. Lucky I have adapters for my Garmin power supplies and it'll stop the cable crush issue but it also puts the cable out in the airflow (unless I find a micro usb L-connector).

  • Of course Express fails to update the Edge 1000. Of course it does.

  • Reinstalled latest Garmin Express. Nope.
GACd this missing DLL to see if it makes a difference. Nope.
Cleared ProgramData/Garmin to see if it makes a difference. Nope.
Next step is to try another computer.

  • From the error message it seems they only use that library to display the EULA. What bullshit.

  • Yeah, this is the real problem ^

  • Initial sync failed is all that says. Not much to go on!

What about syncing it with garmin connect on a phone first?

  • Yeah, I got nothing from it either. Sync the Edge with a phone? You mean connect it via bluetooth or something? I don't see how that would help. I'm trying another computer now.

Requires .NET runtime so perhaps my dev machine has something it doesn't like installed on it. This laptop is clean of work shit so it should be ok from that perspective.

  • Hhmmm, mine does the same now. Definitely didn't before. Must be an upgrade I've missed following my early adopter griping.

  • I reckon all that masturbation's turned you blind.

  • Looks like the laptop update is working so either Garmin doesn't like AMD or it doesn't like something Visual Studio has kicking about.

  • First short ride with 1000:

    Pros
    It didn't crash
You don't need to set turn by turn for every course individually (once I found it)

    Cons
It's heavy and long so rotates on my TT mount.
It's slow calculating and recalculating, actually seems slower than 800 but maybe that's because I used the recalculate on route option?
When it's calculating or telling you you're off course it doesn't redraw the screen, so it looks like you're still on the course - cue extra mile detour to get to next RAB for a uturn.
The screen didn't respond well to my gloves - lucky they're full of holes so finger tip works better.
Probably more but I'll get used to it I guess.

Oh battery life down to 60% after a couple of hours. I'm going to disable Glonass to see if it's any better. Nothing else like WiFi or Bluetooth is on.

  • Garmin are slow to calculate when it's new out of the box generally (base on mine and customer's Garmin).

  • There was a fairly big discussion on this topic earlier about GLONASS actually and whether it eat more battery or not.

Some says its finding satellite quicker thus less time searching, others adamant that it drain battery more having two system running.

IMO, it's the screen that drain the majority of the batteries.

  • How does being a new device alter route calculation speed?

If it's a caching thing, then that just means it's going to be slow for ALL new route calculations.

  • Garmin themselves say to turn off GLONASS for longer battery life.

I was running the screen in manual mode, second darkest setting.
