  • until I find a better way than the horrible chunk of Klick Fix plastic bit...

Y'know the deal, save up and get Wilson to make you one.

Overall weight will be easily half (if not less) than the KlickFix and bag combine.

  • @withered_preacher That was my plan, but my bag (super C) didn't reach down as far as the rack. I guess it depends on saddle height.

  • @vello great version of the bagman2 you made!

  • Nice work. Seriously considering commissioning you to make two of these struts for me. Or four, in fact, given that I have two Bagman 1s. Mind you, then I'd need to get some rack mounts brazed onto my bikes.

Your construction appears to be a better option than the Bagman 2, purely because of the more flexible metal you've used.

I wonder if Ed Brophy happens to be reading all this. He's the bloke who designed both versions of the Bagman. I have his email address so might direct him here myself.

  • My solution isn't interesting for him because it's a set distance, too bespoke/non transferable. If I'd use my Bagman on another bike of mine it would probably work because there's actually a little bit of adjustment at the sliding clamps that I ripped off a rack, but it wouldn't work on another bike frame size, different "saddle to seat stay" distance, etc...
Actually even in my case, this being my only bike with slight compact geo/ slightly sloping top tube, I would probably not be able to use it on my ratty commuter or my road bike... (they don't even have rack mounts, they out anyway with that solution)

  • True this. But the bloke who designed the original Bagman mounts might be interested to know that there are people who like the way his racks look but don't like the way they break.

Given a few reinforcements and design tweaks, I'm pretty sure the Bagman 1 (without the support struts) could be made much more robust.

  • Despite my preference for racks, I have an old brooks saddlebag support thing I picked up at a jumble, made from chromed c.1/4" wire, that is a loop that clamps (with these broad V shaped flanges) onto the seat stays, no rack eyes needed. It works pretty well, not at all bouncy. I reckon this design (onto the stays, not saddle) would be the best approach for carradice if they wanted to improve on the Bagman. Maybe that's old hat to them though. @Diamond_Supercool

  • Yeah I've had a few of those. Lots of ppl made them in the middle of last century. They're good though. I guess the isssue is nowadays ppl have their saddle too high for some of the stay mounted racks to work effectively.

  • Wouldn't say not having rack mounts is that big of a deal with the support struts on a bagman, as there won't be much pressure on them, so a seatpost clamp with eyelet for this is enough. I believe carradice sells one, and there are others too. Or they can be bolted to the brake bridge like I did (there's a picture a couple of pages back). Bit of a bodge, but does the job.

  • Won eBay auction on Sunday, this arrived today at work... £15 posted including postage, and unless I misread the guy said support wouldn't be included but he sent it... Really pleased! There's quite a project of repairs to be done, but, as recommended by @withered_preacher, I also bought a speedy stitcher...
It's in a quite sad state, I'm tempted to throw it in washing machine and re wax cotton and re grease leather... But afraid of damaging it...

Anyway, what's Sue's grand mother's name so I can update list?

  • Wow, I have the same bag! Love that clamp, shed engineering at its best!

edit: I see yours is a long flap though.

  • Thanks now I see what the colors should be, especially the Carradice label!
Clamp isn't 100% shed engineered. I've seen the very same before, coppiThat had one. Now, the Miche skewer and bit of wood combo could very well be home made...

  • That clamp looks proper tough.
I have and recommend a speedy stitcher, but I think the reference to it in this thread was made by @General_Lucifer.

  • Getting there (slowly) in the antique Carradice refurb...
Still quite a few holes to repair still...
Anyone had experience with using the Carradice re waxing thing to re proof the cotton duck fabric?

  • Vaguely hijacking Carradice thread to say that those mudguards are mint!!

  • Advert spam - I have a lovely Carradice Cadet for sale here if anyone is interested...http://www.lfgss.com/conversations/279650/#comment12710173

Hey Loic, I bought some of the reproofing wax Carradice sell (as well as a patch of the duck fabric for repairs) but I've not got 'round to using it yet. I'd be interested to know how you get on.

And I have a similar vintage bag to these^ in fact mine looks almost identical to @adroit 's, except mine has the label above the orange triangle. #csb

    Amen, +1 and all that.

  • Carradice Nelson mounted in the Skully Method with bungee. Seems pretty stable with no sway, although it needs proper testing. Made by Christine.

Hopefully it'll do away with the need for the annoying single pannier for work. And be pretty useful for camping trips. Proper old man bike now.

  • ^looks very neat. Is it attached to the saddle or via the SQR quick release? Out of interest does anyone use the rackbag? they dont seem to be very popular here, not sure why as they look great, but then again I haven't used one.

  • None of the quick release mounts. It's attached to the rack with one of the provided straps at the bottom of the bag. The bungee is hooked there too. At the top, currently I've used some toestraps to secure it directly to the saddle rails, since I haven't bought those little cyclo loops, and I don't think I can bring myself to fit those to an SLR saddle...

  • Is there a side pic of this bike?, I like the look of it!

  • An earlier pic, with another carradice saddlebag

  • How's the rear light attached there? I use the same bag on one bike and it is awkward to fit lights.
