If you're doing web stuff check out miguel grinberg's flask book.

If you want to do some data science, then you could start with Doing Data Science. Has both R and python examples.

It's to call an API for work...it works with Python so locked in there.

Let's see what the local friendly bookshop has, they should have the O'Reilly. And coffee, which is also important :)
