This got my Garmin 800 out of its boot loop. I'd already copied the Garmin folder so just replaced all the files to get back my settings and it works. Edge 1000 or etrex 30 for me next failure device?

  • I have sent retailer details showing Garmin 810 was faulty at time of purchase but they are trying to limit my refund (current price - 20% for use) because the Garmin is was in my possession longer than 6 months.

I've argued that since it was bought prior to Oct 2015 this applies:
"Bought something prior to 1 Oct 2015? Under the Sale of Goods Act, an item still has to be fit for purpose - but you have a 'reasonable length of time' rather than the fixed 30-day period to get a full refund."
    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/consumer-rights-refunds-exchange#goods

Also, since it's an intermittent issue and the device is only used intermittently itself, it's a lot harder to identify as faulty. Also made the point that it's just outside the 6 months and that the unit was in Garmin's possession for some of this time being repaired.

If anything, they should be providing me with extra money to compensate for my time and data losses.

  • Good Morning,

Thank you for your email. The refund offered is in accordance with the sales of goods act that you have quoted. Please see a summary of what the sales of goods act entails below, we hope that this will answer any questions you may have and assist us in bring this matter to a close for you in the most convenient way, be it a refund subject to usage or a replacement unit. Please note on reading the following that we have offered a replacement and have offered a reasonable refund subject to usage as a gesture of good will, ordinarily we would only offer a repair or replacement on a product that has been with the user for this period of time.

    Returning faulty goods

If you buy a product that turns out to be faulty, you can choose to reject it which means you can give it back and get a refund. But, the law only gives you a reasonable time to do this – what's reasonable depends on the product and how obvious the fault is. However, even with major purchases or complex items, it’s safest to work on the basis you usually have no more than three to four weeks from when you receive it to reject it.

    Faulty goods replaced or repaired

You have the right to get faulty goods replaced or repaired if it's too late to reject them. You can ask the retailer to do either, but they can normally choose to do whatever would be cheapest. Under the Sale of Goods Act, the retailer must either repair or replace faulty goods 'within a reasonable time but without causing significant inconvenience'. If the seller doesn't do this, you're entitled to claim either: • a reduction on the purchase price, or • your money back, minus an amount for the usage you've had of the goods (called recision) If the retailer refuses to repair the goods, and they won't replace them either, you may have the right to arrange for someone else to repair your item, and then claim compensation from the retailer for the cost of doing this. You have six years to take a claim to court for faulty goods in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; in Scotland you have five years.

  • Okay, I've recieved the eTrex 35 Touch that's for my dad.

First impression is positive, compared to the original eTrex, setting up is a doodle, it got an Edge-style option on the Ride selection (with the lap and play/pause button on the screen rather than on the body), this mean you can simply plug and play.

It have several option when start up, ranging from Bike, Tour Cycle, Mountain Bike, Hunt, Fish, Climb, Geocache and Hike.

Already it look like a better option than the Edge Touring if you were to use it for actual touring (as in going camping with no power plug in sight), much much better.

ANT sensor is easy to find in drop down menu.

The GPS/GLONASS is very sensitive, give you a much more accurate location, quick to find satellite (quicker in same location compare to Edge), ANT is an option (easy to find via drop down menu) as well as Bluetooth.

I've tried the usual way of pausing a ride in the Edge (pause/turn-off-then-on/start) and it work.. ish.
Wasn't very clear but when it start again, you need to go and select "Bike" all over again, it doesn't show "pause" but merely "start" which give you the illusion that you've lost your ride, however upon pressing start, it resumed what you've left off.

Not very clear, will look into it more, but so far it's extremely promising and something I would much prefer to use over my eTrex 20, especially for audaxes, have yet to try it with Garmin Connect and Strava.

Disadvantage - it's fucking massive, the screen size is the same, but the thickness is nearly twice that of the Edge, and of course the bike mount isn't the same.

  • ANT sensor is easy to find in drop down menu.

Could it pick up a power meter or is it just for HR and cadence sensors?

  • I have no idea but if I do get accepted at a new job I may be able to test this.

  • Have a look in the fields display option Ed. If there's an option for Power to be displayed, then it will be able to pick it up.

  • Shiny (The Fenix HR) although still no optical HR for swimming yet (DCR says they still recommend a strap).

I await the announcement of a 925xt/935xt (e.g. the 920xt with wrist based HR) since I've just bought my 920xt.

  • Oh, it's a Garmin version of the Recon...

We so love Garmin at the moment...

    Release the hounds!

  • Tempted by the Fenix 3 HR to replace my Fenix 2. Anyone want a pristine Fenix 2, with 2 chargers?

Not so tempted by the Varia Vision. I've got Oakley Airwave 1.5 skiing goggles with a HUD (more of a look-down display really) and while it's a very cool toy, it's basically rather pointless. I generally tend to use it for seeing what the time is, and its slight overkill for that. Although I have started doing more jumps since I discovered the airtime metric...

  • Although I have started doing more jumps since I discovered the airtime metric...

I'd love that. Does it go down to msec precision?

  • Just bought an Edge 25. Having managed somehow to sync a couple of courses from my mobile via bluetooth to the device, I now can't sync any more either via Garmin Connect or via bluetooth. I used internet explorer and downloaded the latest communicator plugin and have garmin express.

The bluetooth is working as it's picking up my missed calls.

Completely new to all this so maybe there is something others have worked out that works?

  • You can just use the manual upload option on the garmin connect website.

  • I'm trying to transfer a course onto the device so I can follow it/use it for navigation. Can I use manual upload for that?

  • Yes, get hold of the gpx and download/ put it into the newfiles folder.
The above may be duff info, please read here
    https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?307826-Edge-25-courses

  • Does it act as a USB drive when you plug it in to a computer?
If it acts like an 800 or 810 then you just copy the .gpx file into the Garmin/NewFiles directory and then reboot the device. If you're lucky, the course will then appear in the Courses list.

    #800 #810

You might have to create the Garmin folder if it doesn't already exist, but it should.

  • Only tenths of a second. So most of my 'jumps' don't register as such.

  • Don't think I can find it unfortunately, doesn't look like power meter is supported.

  • OK, thanks. Looking at that forum apparently only FIT files work. Haven't tried actually following a course yet, so will see what happens then.

  • I've had no problems adding the courses to the 25 (just sending fit files to the device via garmin connect seems to work ok). However, with a decent sized route (100km) I was only able to get it to work once on day one. Since then the device has crashed every time I have used the very same course (or any other course) - with no changes between day one (fine) and day 2 (100% crashy).*

I have subsequently resorted to the ridiculous semi-solution of creating a 5 yard route outside my house and following that every time I ride (which doesn't crash - possibly due to the tiny size). This means I get the benefit of the compass pointer (which is unavailable outside of course following!) telling me which direction I'm going - and thus only use it on rides where I pretty much know where I'm headed anyway! It's basically become glorified cycle computer with a compass and a retrospective route uploader...

*I have not retried this yet on the latest firmware (3.0) as my 800 sprang back to life after getting condensation in it, so it has resumed proper course following ride duties for now.

  • I've just "upgraded" to an 810 (from a 705), and had the joy of experiencing afresh all the rage at how badly set up these things arrive out of the box.

  • If you're going to return it (and you should if it doesn't work as expected) you should do so within 6 months, otherwise you'll go through the ballache of arguing with the retailer about the Sales of Goods Act and what 'reasonable' means in terms of dealing with bugs.

  • Wait until it starts freezing and crashing everywhere. That's when the fun really begins. :)

  • Is it? seemed rather painless.

A bit more complex than the Edge Touring.
