Google Maps navigation is scarily good.
So good I don't even use a mount or screen. I just connect the bluetooth to the stereo in my car, put some music on, and let Google Maps reduce the volume to give me spoken directions.
And it hasn't failed me once.
Seriously, not a missed turning or anything.
And without having the screen on, I barely use a couple of % of battery in a 1 hour drive.
I can't recommend Google Maps highly enough for sat nav.

does google map navication follow a gpx route and give turn directions? obviously google's normal navigation will be less useful to @skinny in the transcontinental race

I sort of do the same but have Ingress running while I drive.

Google Maps navigation is scarily good.
Mostly decent I agree, however I have two words which it seems unable to handle: Milton Keynes
Not sure if the GPS was playing up but it consistently sent me off roundabouts at the wrong exit or put me into a lane which led me astray.
Maybe it knew Ikea was going to be hell?
Anyone got a Sat Nav app shout out?
