  • I had a g 2.3 petrol 460. Had it for 7 years until I put a con rod through the engine casing. Did all the work myself up to then but decided to chop it in after that. It cost a lot to run but lovely with it. They are quite different to the defender, a lot more refined. They can be a money pit though, if you've got any specific questions I might be able to help.

  • That's all the awesomes in the book. I'd love a G-wagon one day when money allows. We considered them, but reading up on running costs seriously put us off. What kind of mpg do you get with the om606?

  • I did a lot of research on which model to get, the ultimate was meant to be the om606/463 combo but on further reading the older w460 petrol only does about 10-15mpg with a crappy 100bhp, but diesel om606 from the 463 which gets 20ish - when you put that engine in the 460 and set to 2wd (not an option on the 463) with all the electronics stripped out the mpg is way better- for the first 250miles I had just got it so thrashed it quite a lot and have been playing around to see when the turbo kicks in and how fast etc and only used 50litres which is 23mpg ish- with some sensible driving 30mpg will be achievable for sure. parts are pricey yes but because there are so few electronics I can work on it myself. For me it's the perfect blend of classic and modern driver (so far)

  • nice! I'm looking at new seats but not sure what combo for the rear, at the moment interested in maxda rx8 seats up front and Volvo v70 in the rear that fold totally flat, all black leather but it might be easier to just go with landrover p38 seats

    I'm a mitsi shogun man myself, but have an itch for both the g-wagen, and the never released in UK X164 GLK

  • 30mpg sounds great in that kinda car. We're getting 35mpg in our w124 on a good day which I think it's pretty impressive for a 22 year old car with that kind of comfort and loading capacity

    Depends really - the car can go fast from 0-60 but that would also mean replacing the front tyres for every third run to Saino's.

    I observe all speed limits apart from the motorway, generally, where I tend to end up around 85mph.

    My dad taught me to always match the revs when changing down (he'd learnt to do this driving non-syncromesh lorries), so I do go down through the box and engine brake a lot - I tend to give the brake pedal a light press just to show the car behind that I'm slowing, but the majority of the braking is compression braking on the engine.
