• So, I've got the day off and finally made it to the post office to collect my second Bluemels Spearpoint extension.
A no 7 this time. This one clamps on the fork legs as opposed to the no 6 which is eld on by the front brake bolt.

  • I have never understood how these work. Do you cut down a normal mudguard for the rear and use both?

  • Like THis

  • What is the point of that then? Worst of both worlds surly?
Second picture looks a bit more plausible though

  • tbh, I'm not sure-and I think the one on the 2nd pic may be bit broken-I'm pretty sure it's supposed to join up under the fork crown.

I'm guessing it was a lot to do with fashion-people liking the look of it more to the 'normal' flat fronted guards. I suppose the fork clip on ones may be a hangover from non drilled forks on rod brake frames?

Maybe someone else here can enlighten me more though. If I'm honest I just like the period look of them, really.

  • Yes, technically like the second I guess but the majority of bikes seem to just have the one a la @ElGato 's Bates. Maybe it was an old school club racer thing?

  • Maybe they were intended for people having a basket in front to protect it and its contained stuff from mud?

  • I've got a nice vintage GB stem that may suit one of these builds if anyone is interested? Cheers

  • That Bates is needing some Shockstops.

  • I would LOVE to do Eroica again, but at the moment funds are too tight. I can't see myself being able to drum up the dosh until after Christmas at earliest, if at all.

  • I have just picked up a bundle of pre war CTC Gazettes, and have spotted a couple of adverts for these spearpoints. They always seem to be shown on their own, no other guards in place?

  • @sacredhart I am interested in a GB spearpoint stem, any photos?

  • a few changes:
genuine NOS Dare brand rubber sleeves and an Osgear derailleur.

the tinkering on Hobbs might now be finished. I have a 1952 EA Boult as my next project.

  • Very nice!

  • Looks great. Let me know if you still need the headset!

  • That is lovely. Vey jealous, would love an Osgear but soo expensive.

  • Just won these lovely Lytaloy callipers!

  • Very nice. Just need the levers to match.

  • As luck would have it, I already have some purchased off this very forum!
I picked the callipers up today and they're lovely. I always wondered why they fetched a premium over say, GB, but upon seeing them, it's immediately obvious that they're a very very very well made piece of kit. I hadn't noticed that the Lytaloy font was different on the seperate callipers but that doesn't bother me (too much)!

  • Very nice!

  • I've got some GB levers just like those. How does the cable sit in them? Is there a ferrule missing?

  • A very good question! There's a set on ebay at the moment that don't have an external ferrule but there's obviously some sort of mark on the levers where there's been one. No chance anyone's got a closeup?

  • I saw another set that had screw-in barrel adjusters, but yours look like mine and don't look like they are threaded.

  • from the catalogue on the V-CC library
