Get whatever chainring you can afford.
If you want to put less strain, wide range cassette will help.

Just thinking out loud - Longboard's are seriously the best thing ever. My feet have, by and large, been unaffected by the rain and surface water over the last week. The Chromoplastics on my Cross Check are really quite meagre in comparison to the Longboard's. Dunno why they aren't more widely available...

While everyone's chatting mudguards: I fitted this a month or so ago. Best £4 I've ever spent.

It is MASSIVE. Had to cut it down a bit though it still rubs on the road during cornering. Flexible enough not to interfere with things on rougher surfaces too.

That good to know, the MTB mudguard of mine is rather short so the extra length should be perfect.

You're not wrong there;

Aye! I had to cut that whole pointy bit off the bottom of mine.
And I should point out that the bendy arms are quite hard to bend and are quite thick. If tyre clearance is at a premium (as in my case), probably best off bolting them on :)

You can use a bolt, two headset top caps and a headset spacer to make something just as effective for next to nothing.

Good idea

next to nothing
Assuming that you have all of those things spare. Otherwise you probably wouldn't be able to put that together for much less than £8.
Definitely a good idea if you do though.

I did a lot of on/offroad riding over the holiday on my straggler set up like this.
It's so comfortable for long days and the Nano's (from Jontea) are excellent offload and not at all bad on road.
I've changed the rear "mudguard" as it was pretty much useless. I've got a standard SKS on there now. -
