There is some charm to making stuff yourself, but on the other hand BigxTop, swift etc also looks tasty.

I'm looking for a matching front and rear rack. I like the Tubus but want a matching pair.

What's out there that looks good and doesn't break the bank? Are there alternatives to the Velo Orange Randonneur/Constructeur combo?

Bit of advice please, am looking for a front and rear rack for a 70s dawes kingpin. Wheels are 351 with mudguards as well so need to have a bit of clearance. Anyone know of racks for smaller frames and wheels?

By going used / NOS you could use the ones originally designed for it?

I made front and rear racks for a 'shopper' some years ago. In practice, I tend to use one or the other, rarely both - it might be worth trying just one to start with. FWIW I use the rear one most.

Cheers. Had been looking at getting an original but not sure if they'd be strong enough for weekend touring. Have used rear rack and panniers for commuting for years now so keen to get the kingpin into an all purpose monster!

That one hasn't got the handy strap to stop it swinging forward.

They do custom work. Sure an extra strap isn't beyond their talents. And it's made in England.

To be quite frank, it's not something you really need (although I do like the sound of it).

They seem to have some nifty features, and I like that their capacity is between the smaller and larger/front rear Ortlieb rolltop panniers.

so, I've found thule touring panniers for a price close to ortlieb back roller plus.
I like the look of them - especially the yellow is very expedition like.
But a bit put off by the weight. Any reason to choose one over the other?
Will be used mostly daily for commuting and shopping so Compression straps are a big plus.

I was just looking at Thule panniers - do you know if they come with a lower clip?

The thule site shows they use magnets to attach at the bottom of the pannier. Not sure I'm into this :/

Think I'm about to buy some Ortleib plus Front panniers, unless someone pops up in the next day saying those there blackburn ones are worth the expense, and the hassle of finding them.

Arkel Orca panniers also look super nice, but a bit more spendy than Ortleib

I went with ortlieb in the end. because of that magnet thing. It just seemed a bit too complicated compared, and you'd need to leave the magnet clamp on the rack permanently which I'm not interested in as the panniers are for occasional use. I bought some webbing though and hoping to fab up some compression straps as I'm tired of the flappyness of empty orliebs...

If you get anywhere with compression straps let me know - I'd be very interested in doing something similar!
