A friend's Dad is a serial audaxer and uses a smartphone (Android I think) with a dynamo hub to constantly charge it so it never goes flat. Don't know what he uses to navigate but could try to find out.
Ridewithgps (my preferred route plotting site) have an app which sounds like it would be suitable but I haven't used it.

Anyone successfully used their Android smartphone for waterproof, reliable navigation?
I am sick and tired of Garmin's failures and might try a phone solution, at least as a backup.
