  • No matter how tight I screw the QR Skewer on my rear wheel, the wheel flexes in the dropouts by around a cm in each direction. How can I fix this - new skewers or is something else amiss? Recently replaced bearings.

  • I had this when the dropout was worn so that the quick release was clamping on the end of the axle rather than on the dropout, the axle protruding very slightly on the dropout. A quick file on the end of the axle to shorten it a fraction fixed it.

You need to look at what is moving. Just the rim? Try rebuilding the wheel. The rim and the hubshell, but not the axle? Bearings are fucked. Everything including the axle? The QR isn't working. Sometimes this can be due to an over-long axle stopping one or both ends of the skewer from clamping the dropout to the lock nut. If you have just replaced the bearings and this problem is new, have you got equal amounts of axle sticking out past the locknuts on both sides?
