It's not for me Ed, it's for my gf. when she's dropping off our kid to the nursery in January, and also just riding around with him at the moment. She's pregnant as well so is finding it tough to carry the bag on her back and ride with the 13kg of kid in the rear child seat. So there is usually stuff like kids books, water bottle, some food, and others bits and pieces like that. Not a huge amount, nowhere near the same size as a full double or triple panniers.

If she wants to try out the front rack bag you can borrow it in the new year when I'm back in london (unless you can make it down to New Cross in the next hour?).
Might be cheaper than getting a custom transformer bag/pannier set up.
Or what about a sainsburys basket attached on the rack then she could just put her existing messenger in there?
How much stuff you do need to carry? I've got a bigxtop front rack bag (like the rando bag but a little larger). It's got d rings either side so I use a padded camera bag strap with it when off the bike.
It's not as comfortable as a messenger when wearing it on the shoulder but it's not bad.
