• Why are we trying to judge sports people by their personality?

I'm pretty sure they meant meaning 2 of personality when they came up with the name of the show, using 'personality' to distinguish between the sporting feats embodied in one person and the sports performance of the year or sports team of the year. They didn't mean to make it a judgement of morals or temperament, simply a judgement of which single human being best embodies sporting prowess in that year. It has become corrupted by a the total dominance of the first meaning in common discourse and an increasing public obsession with judging people for what they think rather than what they do.

  • Which to be fair all seems to stem from an age when the British were a bit crap at sports. These days we seem to be a bit more of a presence on the world sporting stage. Except when it comes to football where we're just crap. It's literally our worst choice of national sport.
