Merckx owners thread

have now seen a corsa extra with Max tubing - please can you tell me what these are like or am I better off looking for the latter model's.

My wife has a MAX. I have the MXL. The main practical difference is the oversized top tube on the MAX. It is, like all oversized framesets, a bit more prone to small dings. The rest is almost just a question of aesthetics. Personally I like the externally lugged MAX fork--- have one also on my track bike-- but the internal version (which is what the MAX got) is also quite nice. The paint on the MXLs is a bit better as the MAX did not get the Zinc basecoat but either way we are talking about frames made in the 1990s. The MAX is quite rare as not many were made--- Merckx back then thought few people would be willing to pay for them (the frames were around 2000 DM or around $1250 USD back in '92). Worth getting? Sure if the price is right and the geometry/size is right..
