  • Same. Got cable as soon as it came to our area, never had anything else. Have to fight with them every 2 years to not put our prices up!

  • No one offers you anything per se., you have to call and either ask for a free speed boost, or upgrade and ask for a loyalty discount. Underline that with the threat of leaving/switching and you should get it.

so yeah, either ask for free speed or ask to pay for it and then get money off.

  • I got loyalty upgrades too, argued on the basis that my last free "upgrade" was actually a downgrade. I used to have 5MB up, and when they moved us to a 50MB package for free it reduced the upload speed to 3MB. I argued that my job required the 5MB up and that effectively they had doubled the price, so they gave me the 100MB package for the original cost of the 30MB package, and then when that was upgraded to a 120MB package the price remained as if it were the much lower package.

It is actually true though, upload speed is a big deal for me as I'm pushing deploys from home. But it took a lot of arguing to get the speed that I originally purchased the cable access for. They spent years lowering the upload speed, and I only got it back by them giving me a stupid fast package.

Ultimately the same thing is true as always: You have more negotiating power if you're willing and able to leave.

  • Truth is I didn't notice any difference when I went from 10 to 30 so it's not that important.
I would like to keep the price down though. And of course threats to leave are only effective if you actually are prepared to leave. Once in a while I am sure they enjoy calling someone's bluff.

    Absolutely.

I never play that card unless I'm willing to walk away.

  • @ ffs

  • LOL it's really driving you insane isn't it... @willmellin....

  • I recently complained to Virgin and my internet connection has been a bit better since.
I also got a new wireless router and wifi dongle for my computer to use a n/ac connection.
It's still patchy as fuck and goes down to 6 mbps in the evenings because Virgin throttle us to fuck, but at least it's better than before.

  • Is it just a coincidence that the day after I requested my MAC code from Virgin, my phone line no longer gets a dial-tone?

  • Yes

    Wait, MAC code?

  • Aye, still on National Broadband here.

  • Virgin Media are obsessed by upping the download speed... but the upload speed remains a paltry 10Mbps.

  • Got an email from Virgin media:

David, give your Mum the gift of Cumberbatch this mothers day

    Dear Virgin media,

Firstly, my mum is dead, so spamming me about giving her anything is offensive

Secondly I do not even know what a 'Cumberbatch' is unless you are suggesting I plant a Cucumber Patch on my mum's grave

    David

  • Well it seems as if the 'State' will have carte blanche to browse through all of our internet content, therefore the 'State' should provide free rock-solid broadband for all no matter what country farm you live on.

  • and same state should also know whether your mother is alive or dead and avoid spamming mothers day sales pitches to people like me with dead muthers...the fuckers

  • So much this

  • Anyone still experiencing speed cuts and complete service breakdown in the evening with Virgin? Some times just seems to go back to 56k despite the crazy speed test results

  • ^yes virgin are complete c*nts. Who should I go with instead?

  • Catch 22.

'outage' in my area N4. Virgin say no internet till 11 August, asked them to end my contract so I can connect to another provider, the say I'm still 'connected' and would have to pay £250 to disconnect, I say I'm not connected as they're not providing me with a connection, and we go round and round until the customer service woman hangs up on me #outrage

  • If you have the TV package, you may have recently (within the last 30 days) received a letter advising the monthly cost is going up. If so you can end on that basis. It's clause J3 in the T's & C's

  • Mwahaha

Anyone want a game of Counter Strike?

  • Virgin finally updated my home broadband:

I've also replaced my household router with an EdgeRouter and my Wi-Fi with a Unifi Access Point.

This should allow me to VPN all traffic on my home network to my own streisand instance elsewhere, and effectively adblock the world.

Oh, and my Wi-Fi now overpowers everything else in this densely populated tower block, I even get a signal when I'm 20 floors down and outside :)
