ITA Headset

Posted on
  • So i bought an old Italian track frame that requires an ITA headset. According to the internet i can use a "normal" headset. Is this true or should i look for an old used ITA headset to not screw things up?

  • Only the adjustable race and top/locknut from an ISO or JIS HS can be used.

The ITA thread is cut at a slightly different angle, but the steerer will recut the HS threads if the former is steel and the latter aluminium.

The OD of the frame cups and ID of the crown race are different though, so they still need to be ITA.

  • Oh man this wasn't the answer i was looking for :/ Stupid Italians with their stupid non ISO standards.

  • The difference in the diameter of the frame cups is only 0.2mm (ie 0.1mm on each side), which is within range of a tidy bodge (quite possible that paint, gunk or shoddy manufacturing have made-up the difference anyway).

Which just leaves the crown race: ITA will be either 26.5mm or 27.0mm, versus 26.4mm for ISO.

If it's the former, some time spent with Emery cloth might be all it needs (but if the race ends up off-centre then you'll notice it). If the latter, then you could use a JIS race (assuming you could find one).

Ideally you'd take it to your friendly, local machine shop who could turn it down for a modest sum.

  • Guess i just buy a used one from eBay. Thanks for all the info.
