  • This is what I was hoping to hear from someone, sounds good I am unsure whether I should go full out vegan straight away, or if I should go veggie first, watching the animal products I eat and then see if i will be ready to give the transition to vegan a try...

    What did you guys do?

  • I exercise regularly and go to the gym often. Im also trying to 'bulk'. I am worried if I cut out all animal proteins I will loose a lot of weight.

There's a whole bunch of info online about vegan body building. Spend a bit of time understanding the science and it'll probably work out.

I am allergic to nuts, thus I will miss out on a massive non animal protein source here.

Plenty of other proteins available: soy (tempeh, tofu, regular old edamame etc.), beans, greens, pulses (quinoa, buckwheet, lentils etc.), mushrooms and there's always spirulina... (if you don't mind everything being green)

I am worried that the meals will get boring and repetitive

You can usually veganise a lot of the stuff you already eat, eating seasonal veg is probably better for you and is an easy way to force yourself to try new things throughout the year. Failing that avocado and hotsauce will improve pretty much every meal.

I am twenty years old, and I have been eating animals and their products for as long as I can remember.

    Got to start somewhere!

Its nearly christmas and I am going to miss turkey dinner tremendously.

I've been trying to perfect a vegan wellington for the last couple of years, it's always tasted great but I've never got the presentation quite right. Don't have to worry about it being dry and overcooked either!

  • may be worth a go... Mixing shakes with water i have always found difficult... prefer a thicker more substantial shake... Could mix with soya

  • amazing. my girlfriend rants on about the magical thing that is 'spirulina' as much as I do about bikes. Will have to do some research tonight me thinks...

    Thanks Andy!

  • My family come from Lucca in Tuscany so not too far from Liguria but chestnuts and chickpeas are quite common in Tuscan cuisine.

  • I really need to start eating better, I've been Vegan almost 6 years now and have somehow survived mainly on junk food.

  • Vegan blend gives me stomach pains. MyProtein uses shite delivery couriers, they lost 4 of my parcels. So I switched to Bulk Powders. Cheaper and faster delivery. They have a whole vegan section http://www.bulkpowders.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?q=vegan.

You can always mix it with Soy Chocolate milk or blend it with fruits.

A friend of mine is a vegan personal trainer and is definitely 'bulky'. Website is here if you want a look.

  • ah yeh, what soy mild do you guys use generally? I usually get it from health food stores for my girlfriend, but wherever I look its rather expensive...

  • Heh, when I went from meat > veggie I didn't really eat much in the way of vegetables... I put on something like 45kg as my diet was basically pizza, cheese on toast, veggie pies, chips and cider :(

  • oh wow yeh, thanks for the link. He is definitely 'bulky'

  • Stock up on long life alpro when it's on offer somewhere. Although now we have a vitamix I could just make my own...

  • I'm convinced that the fact my girlfriend cooks decent meals at least a few times a week is the only reason I'm not dead.

  • PM'd answers to your concerns.. (bit to much of response for the thread)

  • If I were you, I'd go vegi for a while, that will lead you into veganism a lot easier than going in full bore, I was vegi for three years before going vegan, I read up on it a lot and watched shit loads of youtube... I think the main thing is learning to cook a normal meal without having to reach for the meat, it's a learning curve for sure.

One thing is, you're gonna fuck up somewhere along the line, be it in something you haven't checked out in the ingredients, or when you're eating out, hence why I think being vegetarian will lead you into it naturally. The main thing is to enjoy your food, no-one wants to eat crap boring meals, there's no point in doing that at all. Vegan food is a lot bigger than it was 10 years ago, so I think you might find it a tad easier than I did first time round.

London has got some great vegi/vegan restaurants, check out Mildreds down Lexington Road and if you drink, Barnivore will become your best friend as not all alcohol is vegan ;)

Lastly, check out myprotein, who do a whole bunch of vegan protein powders, I'm gonna grab some of their stuff soon as I'm getting back on the fitness wagon again.

  • Never heard of them, I'll check em out thanks @itpit

  • wicked, Yeh I think going veggie will be the first step at least... Many thanks to all for your friendly advice :D

  • sweet. will hav a look.
i live off of pizza. and jus remembered franco manca does vegan options so life is A okay

  • If your ever down old kent road way.. Theres Village Pizza. And some basilico's are also vegan.

  • When do you land in London town mate?

  • There's tiny pizza place in Stoke Newington, opposite the cemetery. They do fantastic vegan pizza.
