My thoughts exactly, presumably same applies for a chain keeper/device as well. I guess it's best to simply let the chain come off in this instance.

I find the forest is actually OK. It's either very watery with good support below or it's just deep mulch. It's the bits on the way back in to town that get destroyed by the horses that look like potential bike killers. I don't ride there.
