  • Oh and bluetooth on the 6+ doesn't seem to work either

  • just upgraded to El Capitan - fark me it's slow - does it spend an age re-indexing everything or something?!

  • Airdrop is a common bug with latest os/ios updates. Not sure on fix eta.

  • This. Google Drive does most of that but it's clunky and unreliable. Dropbox I find even worse. We have an existing 36TB G-Speed raid unit which I want people to access at the same time. Editors will be simultaneously using it as a media drive while working on different timelines. At the moment it's linked via thunderbolt but not ideal as it doesn't allow for out for remote use.

Ta for the info about render farms @Dramatic_Hammer though I wonder how up to date that is given the last update was 2010. As it happens I did some more research and apparently Premiere Pro doesn't have that functionality so the render farm needs are off for now.

  • Is bluetooth the same? It won't connect to any of my bluetooth speaker systems and I can't use Airdrop for the above reason...which is annoying

  • Kinda sounds like you are looking for a couple pieces of hardware. For a minimal server Mac mini will be fine, as far as lifespan mine has been running as a media server nonstop since November 2011. No issues. As far as the video work Mac Pro is pretty much the final word. I left apple just as the "trash can" pros came out, but they are beasts.

  • Good to know on the mac mini front, cheers, particular that's it's been running since Nov 11...

Mac Pros have their pros and cons. For what we need iMacs are better value for now (plenty fast enough and comes with a free 5k monitor. Add a 4k monitor to a Mac Pro and the cost is just daft).

  • anyone got any of these RAM sitting around needing a good home, before I buy from Crucial.
Want to upgrade the Mac Pro I've got.

    Specs: DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.5V • 512Meg x 72

also on the lookout for a magic mouse 1 or 2 to replace the wired one I've got which is on it's last legs.

  • better value but still not the best. and a generation old 8 or 12 core with good graphics card would prob be the cheapest option all around. you shooting in 4k
    ?

  • 1080 generally though some light 4k (A7S/Gh4/1DC etc). When we shoot 4/6/8k it's usually for a commercial and has an actual budget so we'll book time in a post house.

  • Hi Mac Heads!!

Can someone give me a rough guide to how much I should offer for this, please?

    2013 13" MacBook Air
    1.3GHz
    128GB
    4GB

    Is sub £500 achievable?
There's a pretty deep dent in the aluminium casing on one corner but I really couldn't care less and assume this will help lower the price.

This will run lightroom of basic photo culls and minor edits, right?
I plan to continue to do the heavy lifting on my iMac, but this will be really convenient when I'm away from my desk.

    Thanks!!

  • then a "budget" second hand pro would be killer, what do you really gain with a 5k display if the heavy work done elsewhere? Imac will just never be able to replace a pro for raw power.

  • The Xeons in the old Mac Pros are wayyyyyyy outdated now. I think the i7 iMac will out perform them easily.

  • I have 2 of these sticks

samsung - 2gb 2rx8 pc3-8500s-7-10-f2 if they're any good? I don't know what all that stuff in your post actually means!

    They look like this

I also have an internal superdrive going spare if it's of any use to anyone?

  • whoo hooo
thanks to Black Friday I've just pressed the button on a mid range mac mini with a whopping 16 - yes, read it - 16Gb of Ram.

The thinking behind this is that I want it future-proofed till well into the future. The Mini I'm using at the moment is the 2008 model, with 2Gb RAM max, and I can't get anything more than OS 10.6.8 - (big cat something).

So I'm hoping that this will last me well into my dotage before I run out of computer, or Apple change their processor-du-jour, and we've all got to buy new machines anyway.

    Will keep you informed.

  • Been running 10.6.8 on my aged 2009 iMac for ages because I had worries about compatibility of some plugins in Logic 9. Think I may have been over-cautious. Is there any reason anyone knows of I shouldn't just get fully up to date?

Also, in dire need of a new mouse. Anyone got something for sellz?

  • They do just about on single core but multi thread the pros are still mighty powerful. Plus you can add a lot of storage/expansion cards. I've got a mid 2010 6 core and it's better at the heavy lifting than the i7 iMac the better half has.

  • im talking about the 8 or 12core 2012 model. hell even the 2010s. the iMac will be faster than a quad core pro, sure. But thats not what im talking about. Having had the chance to use one that was truly maxed out I doubt any imac could touch it (3.06 12-core, 96gb ram, fastest ssds of the day with an ssd thunderbolt raid.)

  • Hmmm... The top iMac geek benched higher both single and multi core than the current base Mac Pro. I guess there is a tipping point where the Mac Pro surpasses it and it's probably 6 or 8 cores... I've always been underwhelmed by Mac Pro performance, was going to buy one but went with an iMac instead which I find perfect - but then I'm not rendering film.

  • No one who is doing serious video is useing a base pro. Also my recommendation was cost/performance ratio. Depreciation on pros are greater because of their extream new price. The only models I would say may feel underwhelming would be 1,1 or 2,1 models

  • Why wouldn't they use a base pro? Maybe they couldn't afford the next one up? I wouldn't touch anything below 5,1 - and whatever model it is it will need a GPU upgrade (5,1 with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 GPU would be a good call).

  • thanks for putting these forward, not compatible with my mac pro though..
