Warm winter boots with grippy soles (that don't look like hiking gear) and shearling lining anyone? I like the look of the ones with a turned over cuff and don't mind spending a bit to get some that don't fall apart.

LL Bean do their duck boots with a shearling line from memory. Some like the way the look, others don't.
Do you need a shearling lining? A few pairs of really nice warm socks might be easier and give you more choice in boots.

Something like this might work if you want smarter: http://www.crockettandjones.com/product/snowdon-oak#.Uqfcjo2UDzw

Shearling lining means you'll only really wear them when it's bloody freezing. As @Tenderloin says, decent leather boots (commando sole obvs) with thicker or thinner socks would be more versatile.

Most days in the winter out here I can get away with just trainers (is that what UKers call them?) down to -25 or so. If you get any kind of insulation get it under your sole, no need for any lining any higher, you'll just sweat too much and get colder than you would have otherwise.

Thanks chaps, my experience with thick socks is not great but I see what you mean - it is generally the sole that gets cold first.
I like the look of these http://www.mrporter.com/en-gb/mens/belstaff/faystar-felt-trimmed-leather-boots/591523?ppv=2 not sure about the cuff or brand though.

Oh, and minimum 65-70% wool content for the socks.

So the boots want to be relatively smart - is that around the price point?
-
• #4740
Thanks for the link - relatively smart, they are approx double the pricepoint from any other website/shop, to attempt to not quite break my employers social media policy.

@Tenderloin have you got any hiro last meermin's?
I'm tempted to get the austerity Adelaide's MTO...
Usually I'm a 8.5 for OTP. (Barkers, Church). 8 for Trickers and the cordovan meermin's.
-

I don't think so. Though I'm not sure how I'd know...
It reminds me that I'm currently waiting on a pair of bluchers and that I missed out on the MTO cherry cordovans. :(

At the lower end of the scale Clarks do some reasonable winter stuff. They've a variety of Goretex stuff plus some decent lined stuff with foil soles that are pretty warm. Some look pretty rubbish but some are ok.
I got a pair in the sale a few years ago that have happily made it through winter trips to Montreal and Moscow.

The meermin's don't get even close to the carmina cordovan if you ask me. They're great value for money but and I'm pleased with them but let's not pretend you need to be an expert to see the difference between the two.

Can anyone suggest a relatively smart style to dress up chinos (yep) or nice denim? Not something I could wear to the office though. Always found brogues a bit clumpy. Feel like I either live in OTT office shoes or trainers.
-
• #4747
Are you asking for a pair of smart shoes that you wouldn't wear to the office? That would look smart without being 'smart shoes'?
-
• #4748
Smarter than trainers. Not smart per-se. Apols.
-
• #4749
Something from Church's maybe? I quite like their chunkiness, works well with denim or chinos

Desert boot?
UK8 or US8?
