I'm going to get myself a nice espresso machine and grinder.
Can I do better than a rancilio silvia for that sort of money?

Nope. Unless you went second hand.

Thanks.
Want warranty and can put through business so no VAT. New is easiest.

If anyone wants a Porlex tall hand grinder, a one cup plastic V60 and an aeropress (with a pile of paper filters and gubbins) they're yours for postage.
They're all VERY well used (except the V60) the aeropress looks like it's been through the wars and the Porlex handle broke so I hammered on a socket and use a handle from a ratchet set (which you can have as well).
Moving and realised I haven't used any of them for probably over a year and they're just taking.

lol. what did you actually do with it if I may ask?

Dishwasher on a high temp. It looks scratched and has a shade of coffee seemingly baked in. I'm sure you could bleach it clean and buff out the scratches but meh, free.

Any chance of the v60 on it's own? Been thinking of picking one up for a while.

The Eureka Mignon grinder would be better. The Silvia is the machine to beat at that price point though.

have finally ordered a naked portafilter for my rancilio silvia, i am soon to discover how bad my tamping is.
-
• #11412
I'm ignorant, can you explain why it would be better?
-
• #11413
won't be your tamping bud, it'd be the distribution more than anything else.

the shelf my grinder sits under is 450mm high, which compak would you suggest?
the eureka 65 is just 7 mm too tall, though the eureka does really appeal

the mazzer mini electric with the small hopper would fit better in our kitchen.

I'll measure the Compaks on monday. The Eureka is way better than the Mazzer mini IMO but if you have to pull it forward every time you need to put beans in it then it'll be a pain in the arse. That's if you can fit it under the shelf at all.

my other half thinks the eureka looks like a dated dalek "at best fugly". though i have realised our rocky has the same depth and sits out in front of the shelf because its easier to leave it there for filling duties and as such the eureka would sit in exactly the same place
i am thinking function>form

I would agree. The Mazzer looks great but is painfully slow and a proper twat to set up. The Eureka looks much better in white and i find it very intuitive, though @big_daddy_wayne hasn't been impressed with the dosing consistency on his, he tells me.

I found a compak k10 PB for £700 on coffee forums uk, it has the small hopper and clean sweep mods.
I think that should be enough grinder and its being delivered on Tuesday. Christmas is coming early.

OK, gaggia classic has started playing up. Sometimes, the pump just doesn't seem to work. Rather than the loud sound of the pump, I get a much quiter buzz and noticeable click as I turn the pump on and off, with little to no water getting through. Sometimes though, its fine and turns on and off OK, enough to make a cup of coffee fine.
The steam wand seems un affected.Anyone got any clues besides get a new pump? Is there anything else it could be? Worried I'll pull the thing apart, put a new pump on, put it back together to find the same problem/doesn't work at all cos I've ballsed it up.

The click is likely the 3-way solenoid operating. Sometimes this is masked by the pump.
Have you had any pressure issues or problems with scaling?
-
• #11423
I'm so confused which grinder to by. Everyone on the internet has an opinion!
-
• #11424
I've descaled fairly regularly, and managed to get one done as this issue started arrising which didnt seem to help. That's not to say scale definitely isn't a problem...
Think the issue may be exasperated by heat. It works fine first thing and then I turn the unit off, if I turn it on again whilst its still warm from last time, it is most likely to fail me. Does that help any kind of diagnosis? -
