• Heh, I got bumped from behind while waiting to make a very clearly signalled right turn about a month ago in broad daylight...I'd already been waiting to make the turn about 10 seconds when I got hit! It is a type of accident I am particularly wary of...

Having said this, I've heard of something described as 'back to the barn' syndrome...in bad weather, or in this case bad light people feel the need to rush home, being inattentive and making bad decisions along the way. I wouldn't be surprised if this had more to do with the increase in accidents at this time of year rather than the reduced visibility of darkness (well, what passes for darkness in London) itself.

  • from a commute in light to one in darkness is a recipe for disaster.

Can you elaborate a little on this?

  • Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate...

  • Can you elaborate a little on this?

The clocks went back last week so suddenly it's pitch black in the evening when the previous day it was light.

We don't cope well with changes like these in the UK. See also train cancellations over 3cm snow, Brits stocking up on 3 weeks worth of toilet roll because the weather forecast says it'll be windy over the bank holiday weekend, etc etc.

IT'S ALL SO DIFFERENT AND WE HAVE NO WAY OF ANTICIPATING THESE THINGS

  • ^yep.... it's the sudden thing too... people don't have time to adjust or modify their behaviour. And thanks @SCS will have a poke around.

  • Today was my first day back on the bike since I broke my right index finger on 5th September, if that helps provide a rough guideline as to how long you'll be off the bike with such an injury. Lost a hell of a lot of fitness in that time!

  • Finally got around to getting an x-ray after crashing a week ago on holiday in Utrecht when my tyres must have slipped on a wet grill. Turns out I've chipped my radial head so off the bike for a while :-(

I've always cycled with slick Gatorskin tyres but now I am wondering if I get something with more tread, at least for the winters as it's always been a fear of mine slipping on wet leaves or metal grills.

  • Same. I've lost confidence after my accident to the extent that I've completely changed my bike and set up. I've fallen off in the rain and ice on 23mm lots of times, but not significantly hurt myself. I don't want to risk breaking anything again now as it's really no fun at all for lots of different reasons.

I've gone from a 48x19 fixed gear with a front rim brake on 23mm tyres to SRAM Rival, disc brakes and 35mm tyres. Makes a world of difference. I've also got a rack and full mudguards. Maybe I'm just getting old!

  • Lovely

  • I was knocked off last night. Hit and run.

Driver cut left down a side road across my path, knocking me over the bonnet, I get up, motion and yell what the hell - they (driver and passengers) look at me for a few seconds, then scarper up the road. Got the reg number though so hopefully the police catch them soon. I'm relatively intact luckily, just a few scrapes and a sore bruised elbow.

Snapped a leg off my forks, bent my front wheel, tore a hole in my tights and bent by brand new raceblade longs. On top of all that, I'm stuck on the sodding train until I can get new parts! Anyone have a 1 inch threaded fork and front wheel for sale?

  • Sorry to hear that man. If you can bear the paint Paramounted has a fork for sale.

  • Good effort getting the plate.

    BURN THEM!...in court

  • I'm hoping to! The police are still "investigating", so fingers crossed they get somewhere with it...

I'm hoping to just replace the fork and keep the frame (reasonably attached to the thing) - is this foolish optimism, or should I just accept that it might be weakened and start with a new F&F?

  • Hit and run, hit @kati from behind, and squashed against car and railing, delined it happened then drove off, elderly male, Elephant and Castle southbound plate T707 ABY, Toyota RAV4.

Suffer bruised on shoulder and arm.

Will be reported in a couple hours.

  • shit! Hope she is ok. WAC hopefully police can do something .. any witnesses?

  • she didn't get any, only two cyclists helped her up.

  • Just had a call from Simon @OneLessCardigan to say he's "had an off on Walworth Road" he's hit his head but sounded in good spirits and is with a paramedic.

  • Dulwich Paragon jersey'd rider down by Queens Road Peckham station.

Couple of cars stopped and a load of cyclists in attendance. Rider looked a bit dazed and confused but sitting up on the footway and thankfully didn't look injured beyond a bloody nose.

  • Hope he's OK! He didn't attempt to lean in these sub zero conditions did he??

  • I passed someone being attended to at the top of Walworth Road at about 8 or just after, only noticed last minute and probably wouldn't recognise Simon.

It was either at Hampton Street or Steedman Street, just before E&C. They were sitting up talking to the paramedics with a slightly banged up face.

    Hope they're feeling ok now.

    Oh no, I hope his cardigan isn't a write-off.

    Get well soon, Simon!

  • @OneLessCardigan

hope you make a quick recovery

  • Yeah this sounds like him, he's just sent me a photo of said banged up face

  • Didn't look to happy but it was a relief to see him sitting up and conscious. Pretty sure I passed just after the ambulance arrived, saw blue lights from further back which turned into the road.

    Did he say what happened?

  • He doesn't remember unfortunately
