I bought this model for mother at Christmas as a replacement for a bike I'd spent more time maintaining than I care to think about!
http://www.rutlandcycling.com/211955/products/mongoose-crossway-300-hybrid-bike.aspx
Though not female specific the XS is good for 5ft 4 easy, mater is 5ft 1 & still able to swing her leg over the top tube and there's loads of length in the seatpost. Continental tyres, rapid fire 3x8, rack and guards, tbh at the price you can't go wrong. You might want to get a female specific saddle but they aren't the worst saddles.
If you go through topcashback you should get another 3% kickback (I can PM you a cheeky link to sign up that gets me a small kickback too) as well as the £6 off voucher Rutland are offering at the moment. -

Have got this (it is drop bars though)...https://flic.kr/s/aHskgfRbVQ
Bit of a liquorice all sorts - based around a Spesh Allez frame (c.50cm) and a mix of Shimano 2x10 groupsets (part Tiagra, mostly Ultegra 6600), but has seen me through several thousand miles.
Let me know if there is interest and I can fill in some of the other details.

Thanks. Looks good, but maybe a little small! Rider-to-be is 5'6/5'7..

No worries - the sizing on it is a bit of a guess given the age of the frame - if it helps, I am around 5'5" and I've been riding it with a 110mm stem and some seat post to spare, so it might just about suit a reasonably upright position for someone 5'6/5'7 depending on riding style, etc
Full dimensions as follows (as set up in pictures):
TT (sloping) - 515mm
ETT (horizontal) - 525mm
Seat tube (BB TO clamp) - 480mm
Saddle HT (BB to top of saddle) - 685mm
Reach (seat post centre to stem clamp) - 620mm
Handlebar width - 420mm (C to C)
Stem length - 100mm -

looking for a cheap pair of panniers for my mum's bike...
I'm after a cheap set of panniers to complete the set up of the bike I was looking for below (and have now purchased..). Not looking for anything too special - just a v basic pair that my mum can use on a 3 day trip in Scotland to carry food/clothes/sleeping bag. I don't really want to spend any more than £15 or so on these, as she wont use them very often at all.
BOUGHT NOW, THANKS I'm looking for a second hand road bike / light hybrid for my mum, who is seriously due an upgrade from the Boris Bike-style tank she's been riding around. Looking for something with sti shifters, light ish with decent components that I wont have to replace after a few months.. To suit 5'6 / 5'7 rider. Flat bars would be nice.. Budget £250/300.
