  • I had to remove my PT crankset in order to swap it for a bargain compact UT one I got off the 'Bay. I'd read about people just using standard aftermarket gear pullers and also one or two mention that you can just use a coin instead of the Campag plug.

    Turns out it works... it came off a treat with a one pound coin, no need to buy a single tool (though I am lucky in having a girlfriend whose Dad has a massive garage full of car tools for his TVRs). And best of all I'm now free of Power Torque, though I did completely deface the queens head which is treason or something right?

  • fuck you power torque and park tools.
    splashed out on the park PT specific puller and adaptor for PT.

    result - plastic adaptor shattered, attempted to pull with a bit of inner tube instead, the flange off the bearing puller broke and the puller fell to bits. What a fucking load of shite. Any ideas how to get this fuckin crank off? automotive bearing puller? It seems it's pretty well seized together.

    i was thinking of "upgrading" my mirage chainset to something like PT or UT, but it seemed like it was going to be more trouble that it was worth, so got chorus carbon square taper with the appropriate BB...good buy off ebay £52 and i can service it with the tools i already have!

  • UT is just one bolt to install / remove.

  • Plus a small screwdriver to unhook the circlip, but yes, a world away from the woes of PowerTorque

  • Ive yet to install a power torque crank not to mention remove it. I will continue to avoid it best i can.

  • UT still requires a puller for the bearings though right?
    So no 'extra' tools are required? Just extra effort?
    Any idea if the above puller will work on removing the bearings? Or if the claw is too thick?

  • I guess you'd need something to hook under the bearing to pull it off, but your bearing puller might fit. You'd also need something (PVC pipe etc) to get the new bearing on, similar to crown race installation.

    As an addendum to my above woes, I managed to get my PT crank off fine with a cheap car bearing puller. the Park puller was just a pile of shite.

    I was contemplating a move to some easier maintained road cranks but there aren't many (affordable) cranksets out there that would look good with a silver athena groupset that also isn't a downgrade...

  • Does anyone have the tools for the above cranks? Have tried the bodge methods but puller just slips off the back of the crank arm.

  • I went to Bikeworks in Bethnal Green on Thursday and asked can I borrow the tool for few minutes in workshop they run on Thursday (5PM to 8PM) and Saturday (midday to 4PM). They have Varp and it takes only few second to remove. While you there, remove cranks as well with proper tool 'cos it's a pain to remove without limiter on cups.   • I successfully bodged a tool to do this. Bought a three-arm bearing puller from Amazon, then used Sugro and a 2p coin to make a protective surface to push down on the splines with. Worked quite nicely. Happy to lend them out.

  • I did similar with a 3 arm puller from screw fix and a £1 coin as a plug, turns out the £1 is the exact same diameter as the £15 plug you can buy... It fucks the £1 coin up but it can be used again and again.
