I don't think 'Bagarre' alludes to the rider's name. I found this from an on-line Italian dictionary:

"...The definition of scrimmage in the dictionary is turned clash of opinions, bitter controversy, dispute quarrelsome: b. literary, political. Bagarre is also excited and tumultuous phase of a competition, spec. cycling, which begins suddenly and is played in groups, with exaggerated competition."

Took me all of 2 minutes to find that, by the way.
