  • Depends what you're doing. I've never noticed any of the current iMacs getting too loud though, even under intensive GPU apps. MBP, on the other hand - it's that much smaller so needs to ramp its fans up a lot when working hard. It's hardly massively loud though.

  • Ok thanks, maybe I'll see if I can get one sweating in an Apple store. Recording audio is a bummer if a fan kicks halfway through a take!

  • I heard a lot of bad things about the retina iMacs so in the end went for an older S/H one.
The AMD cards get hot and that results in fans and thermal throttling.
Not sure how much of a real problem it is, especially for your kind of work, but for design and a bit (lol) of gaming the older Nvidia cards made more sense.
GPU Boss puts the GTX 775 on par with the R9 M295X which when you take into account the lower amount of pixels it's having to push (retina vs. non) should actually yield better (and quieter) performance.
Hunt out a 2GB 775 and chuck a big SSD in. Half the price.
    Profit?

  • Hello Mac heads. I am buying a 2010 used macbook pro for £200 from a mate. The trackpad doesn't work to click and the battery is shot so only works plugged in. Not bothered about the trackpad as I prefer to use a mouse anyway, but what options do I have with replacing the battery? How much does it cost?

  • Anyone have any recommendations for external displays? Budget between £200-300. Used for Photo editing and graphics work, also some casual gaming but not so important.

Ones I've shortlisted so far are Dells, they seem best quality for the money.

    • U2515H ~ 2560x1440 so higher res then regular 24"
    • P2415Q ~ 4K goodness, over budget though

Both look good, I don't know if the 4k will be overkill though? Was thinking it would future proof me though for whenever 4k becomes a standard. Any other suggestions are welcome.

  • Oh also does anyone have a Magic Mouse they would sell me?

  • Yeah do actually.

  • Shouting out to you gamers, any online demo games that could really test out the performace of a Mac? I don't play games so ideally something that will run itself for hours to end...

I need it to test out some iMacs tha have been having randome performance issues at work...

  • couldn't geekbench or something similar do it?

  • Yeah, or memtest. It's a command line app but is a good stress test for weeding-out bad RAM.

  • I foudn this and running it now.

Students probably think I am taking a mick playing games than loading the printers...

  • anyone got a magic mouse or magic mouse 2, they want to sell, my wired one is fucking with me.

    Many thanks

  • Just bought a mustek a3 scanner of ebay, having no luck getting it to run on my mac mini, 10.8 os. Have downloaded the recommended drivers but it's not having it. Anyone got any experience of Mustek scanners?

  • I'm probably being really dumb, and missing something really obvious, but how do I save a picture from Twitter for Mac?
I can click on a picture in my timeline to bring it into a popup window, but all the copy/paste/etc controls in the Edit window are greyed out.

  • Command shift 4.

Or, on an iPhone or iPad, home and power.

  • Thanks. Not sure I'd have ever worked that out unaided.

  • or Command shift 3 if you wanna capture the whole computer screen.

  • Or command shift 4 space bar if you want to capture an application frame with a drop shadow.

Because everyone loves a drop shadow.

  • that I didn't know.

  • Guys, my girlfriend is considering selling her iMac, but first wants an idea of its worth.

The "Mac2Sell" quoted value is £730. Does that sound realistic? (Seems a bit high?)

    Specs are as follows:

    • 21.5-inch mid 2011 iMac
    • Intel Core i5 2.5GHz
    • SuperDrive
    • 250GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD
    • 8GB RAM

It's in great condition; looks good and runs flawlessly. It comes boxed, with Magic Trackpad and Apple wireless keyboard included.

    Any help would be appreciated!

  • I think the aftermarket SSD has confused mac2sell. decent set up but prob worth a wee bit less. Think I paid 1100 for my 27 with fusion and 775 2gb.

  • Ah yes, £490 with original specs. Thanks man.

So more like £550ish with the upgrades.

  • Yeah that sounds spot on. Could sell it and buy a great gaming pc, for you know, some games...

  • Don't tempt me!
