White Industries maybe?
At the time there was not much choice of chainring sizes, White Industries offer a big range allowing you to go as low as 44/28 (and lower) than sticking to the standard 50/34 which is a little high.
At what time? 5000 years ago?
Chainsets with low BCDs have been around for ages. Likewise chainrings of numerous sizes. Fom large manufacturers too.
