I spoke with Alsal - I probably sounded a bit harsh earlier but that was more to do with just being a bit in the dark - they explained about the state of the internals/lack of available parts and why it was unrepairable, so I appreciate their communication there - top marks.
I think the watch is probably just too old and knackered and whoever owned it before really did a number on it.
Also, I noticed they sell pretty much the whole range of the Junghans Max Bills... Might have to pick one up one of these days if I can ever afford one.
