  • I'm feeling a little addicted at the mo, only 2 in 2 months but that's a lot for me.
Recommend me an artist for a portrait/50's advertising style pin up girl piece?
Undecided as to whether it should fill a space on my arm of random or get a place of its own on my ribs... Would need to be a decent size I guess to get the detail right.
Edit - just want to add it'll be a stylised portrait of LadyLiz inc her tattoos, not just some random misogyny scrawled on me..

  • radness.

  • Valerie Vargas is the "pretty lady" queen, but I gave up trying to get an appointment with her. The stuff coming out of her stable looks good as well. I had my two pin ups done at old London road tattoo in Kingston. Pics available if you are interested, Ed.

  • Hah,I saw this on t'gram and it took a minute to realize it was two pics of one knee and not two knees with one swollen. That made me squirm for a sec ;)

  • Cheers for the advice Steve, gotta admit the stuff on her gallery isn't quite what I'm after, a lot of the pieces seem to be more stylised, especially around the eyes than I'm looking for.
Would be interested to see yours though, will pm.
5mins on Google has found this, which is the style I have in mind- classic advertising style. Unsure of artist but on phone so Google-fu is weak.

  • hahaha, that would be awful! no, he did my other knee earlier in the year thank god. both at the same time would have been too much/i couldn't have gone to work.

son i am disappoint with the lack of 420 tattoos given the page.

  • Did anyone get Friday 13'd?

I was consiedering going to Forevermore to get one but CBA

  • Google Gil Elvgren, not a tattooer but probably the pin up artist you're looking for for inspiration

  • ....and google "vargas pin up"

  • Thinking about a full sail ship tattoo, any suggestion of artists? I might just go back to King o Hearts and get them to do it, but want to consider all options before committing.

  • I like the woodcarving-style ships.

  • Ed,
I spent hours looking at tattoos and artists, there are some people who specialise in that style and I'm sure that messages to the proper tattoo boards will yield results. The whole excercise left me quite depressed. Then I changed my mind about what I wanted. Consequently I didn't keep any of the bookmarks or images I liked.

There is good stuff out there but it takes some finding.

  • I like it. Are you going to get a seagull basher on the other arm?

  • SteveP - cheers dude, know that tattoo forums is the place to go but I hate the interwebs so was kinda hoping the forum wisdom might pop up with a perfect response! Will begin the trawling... Luckily I have a friend who is an amazing illustrator so she's happy to start playing around with some artwork. I believe a lot of the pinup stuff was traced/drawn from photographs and she's up for having a go at that side of it for her own amusement anyway.
Finding the tattooist is the last piece of the puzzle as LadyLiz is undecided how she wants to portray herself. Bit of a weird one really! Erring on the side of classy not cheap and tawdry...

The_Seldom_Killer - I hate using seagull bashers at the best of times(as handy as they are) so pretty unlikely to get one! My arm of random may get another climbing tat- possibly a sprung sticht plate or the topo of Bishop's Terrace in Yosemite(I left a lot of flesh in the fist crack section).

  • my platypus by kolahari

  • Bit of a broken record but don't get an illustrator to design something then give it to a tattooer, find a tattooer who's style you love and get them to paint something! A good illustration rarely makes a good tattoo.

  • Okey doke! Message received. I've not really done tattoos that way round before but take your point.
The illustrator in question has previously designed tats for me which have come out well so didn't think otherwise. At the very least her skills may help us decide on pose and the overall setting of the piece.

  • yes yes.

yours and Lucy's have persuaded me to book in with Kola for over christmas

  • Really love that Laner.

  • I want this on my arm, any tattooist recommendation in London that does similar style?

  • Rad!
Fairly simple and bold. Most artists will do a good job.

Depends if you want exactly that or that imagine done in a specific artist's style
