I find there's no issue with Leytonstone if you're happy cycling everywhere, and agree that the places are generally big and good value. Just a bit of an issue that you have to take countless buses or whatever to get anywhere useful. Or if you have friends or family who want to come and visit as they'll soon stop coming when they realise how isolated it is. They'll soon stop when it's taken them and age to get to you. I also wouldn't really like the mrs walking 15 mins or so from the nearest train station or whatever. Might as well live out in suburbia if you want good value and not fussed about good transport links...
I live about six or seven minutes walk from Leytonstone tube station, and about ten minutes from the overground. Central line takes fifteen minutes to Liverpool Street which is fine by me. Easier to for getting to-and-from than somewhere like Clapton in my opinion.
