I've wondered about DIY lug-lining as well, but I can't help thinking that the "real lug-lining pens" are only usable by professionals. The construction of the "nib" (coming at it from the perspective of having done caligraphy) means you have to have a super-steady hand to get a consistent line. I would have thought your average person could get decent results with a normal tipped marker, but then you have to do more research around what will be the right type of permanent ink/paint.
I had a nervex lugged frame I was going to lug-line with a silver marker like this (but I sold it before getting round to it):but I am not sure if you could get a similar thing for non-metallic colours. I am planning to have a go at this sometime in the next few months, but waiting on the right frame. I back myself on the steady hand (bc of calligraphy) but I think the right pen is the vital issue. I would love to have a crack with a proper lug-liner, but I would be concerned about similar line thickness issues. Let me know what solution you come up with...
So I recently purchased a Nervex lugged path frame which has recently been refinished in dark green. As a little project, I thought I'd give some lug lining a go. Purchased a lug lining pen, small pot of Humbrol enamel (+ thinners), and gave it a go on my beater Dawes 'Chevron' to practice.
The result is so shit, I'm too embarrassed to even post the pictures up here. I found it impossible to get a consistent narrow line, and mine only looks good from 10 yards. That's with pretty plain lugs. I'd hate to even try with Nervex. I'm no artist.
Does anyone know of anyone in SW London/ Surrey who'd be able to do a professional job for me, without my having to sell a kidney to pay for it?
Thanks.
