@howradmichello That facebook link just seems to contain pictures of trainlines running down the middle of a road. I'm not sure why you would think that they would have prevented someone from being killed by a driver who appears to have been under the influence of drink and/or drugs but that is pretty insensitive and very speculative. It's not appropriate discussion for this part of the forum.

A cyclist was killed in a crash in which a van driver failed to stop before a number of other vehicles were also damaged.
The cyclist died at the scene on Crookes Valley Road, Sheffield, at about 21:25 BST on Monday. The van, which then hit other vehicles in the nearby Providence Road area, was found later in Stannington.
South Yorkshire Police said a 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was also arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs and causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs.
The cyclist, a man believed to be in his 20s, has not been formally identified.
agreed,
will withdraw the insensitive comments (comments #2,3,4,5),
it would be better and more sensitive to the relatives of the fallen to suggest that the 20-yr-old has contributed (ultimately via his life) to a cycling culture developing in Sheffield (as does each and everybody who chooses to ride a bicycle as a transport mode);
to develop a cycling culture, it might help for there to be bicycle-themed venues that help-along the transition from people getting in their cars, to them saddling up;
RIP Rider.

resolved via editing the inappropriately insensitive comments;
was posting without consideration of the possible negative impact on relatives of the man in his 20s, apologies, x

ps.
the person who died is thought to be a student
The Star (link is external) reports that the victim, who is believed to be in his twenties, was hit close to the junction with Oxford Street in Crookesmoor at 9.25pm. The Transit van went on to collide with several stationary vehicles on Providence Road, Walkley and was later found on Liberty Drive, Stannington. - See more at: http://road.cc/content/news/169400-police-appeal-information-after-cyclist-killed-hit-and-run-sheffield#sthash.ekAKZdo7.dpuf
reads as though its one of those things that happens from time to time in this world that we live in;
an un-abstract world, where people live and die every day;
sometimes more preventable than other times,

This is very close to home for me. The road where the cyclist died is about 500m from where I'm sat at work. The road where the driver crashed into other vehicles is about the same distance from where I live. Tonight, at about the same time the incident happened, I'll be riding past the site of the death.
I ride these roads daily, it's almost inevitable that the driver has passed me. I don't want to feel lucky that I'm still alive.
Rest in peace rider.
