It was deemed technical enough (or not enough of a time advantage for the associated risk) to be avoided by a fair amount of the elite men, and almost all of the elite women.
A-line/ chicken line comes from mountain biking, not usually seen in cross. A-lines being technically challenging, chicken lines being a rollable, (usually) slower alternative.
