So it's possible to source a new gen cx crankset (cheaper than a road one at some places) and just use the crank arms off that? Awesome.

I believe so.

I haven't done it, so maybe check elsewhere first.

If you do get the CX crank get one with a sensible tooth count and I might take it off you :)

The SRAM CX1 cranks come without a chainring, that's why they're cheaper than a road chainset. The 1×11 road cranks with one thick/thin ring tend to be more expensive than a regular road set with two rings. Sounds like a hipster tax :-)
