I heard a lot of bad things about the retina iMacs so in the end went for an older S/H one.
The AMD cards get hot and that results in fans and thermal throttling.
Not sure how much of a real problem it is, especially for your kind of work, but for design and a bit (lol) of gaming the older Nvidia cards made more sense.
GPU Boss puts the GTX 775 on par with the R9 M295X which when you take into account the lower amount of pixels it's having to push (retina vs. non) should actually yield better (and quieter) performance.
Hunt out a 2GB 775 and chuck a big SSD in. Half the price.

Ok thanks, maybe I'll see if I can get one sweating in an Apple store. Recording audio is a bummer if a fan kicks halfway through a take!
