  • What's up with my iPhone?
It has deleted all my mail (inbox, sent folder, flagged etc) and keeps telling me that there is a problem with my mail server.
Macbook is getting all my email fine, like normal.
I've not changed any settings or passwords, and I haven't upgraded anything recently.

  • what email provider? pop or imap?

  • What's the cleanest, simplest mail app for mac right now? For Gmail.
Wanted to stop using gmail in chrome and get a app for it.

  • Seems to hang a lot and be slow. No reason why.
    A bit like messages does.

  • If it's for iPad or iPhone then Gmail have inbox, which I have but don't use. When I do use it I'm surprised by how different it is...

  • For mac, not phone. But thanks.

  • Seeking advice from all you Macbook Pro experienced people - thanks in advance for any help!

Long story short I will be needing a (used) Apple laptop for less than £700 that is capable of dealing with 100-400MB photoshop files smoothly.

Want to avoid models that are affected by impending logic board death.
Want to be able to switch HDD to SSD if it doesn't already have one.
If I'm correct RAM isn't expandable since the 2012 models (but 8GB would be sufficient).
From what I've gathered so far my options are either a late 2012 13'' retina or a mid-2012 15'' non-retina - I guess a maxed out Air would be up to the task as well, but I would like to have more resolution.

Basically I'm mostly having a hard time deciding between a smaller retina screen or a bigger, matte, non-retina (always loved Apple's matte displays, and always found retina to be very very nice, but kind of awkward to edit photos on because of its weird, glossy 'artificialness' - not sure if this just takes getting used to - on the other hand it feels sort-of insane to buy a pre-retina macbook in this day and age).

Please point out things I'm missing / issues to be aware of when considering the above mentioned models.

    Thanks!

  • The Outlook apps on the phone is simply great, I'll check if there's a Mac version for the computer.

  • You mean microsoft outlook?

  • Outlook? Good grief...

  • I use mail on my MBP. Some guys at work use Thunderbird, but it's shiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Mail has got better over the last couple of OSX updates and linking up gmail accounts to it is much better than it used to be.

  • Mailplane was popular with a friend or two. Replicates the browser view in a standalone app.

  • ^^ ..really? Am using Thunderbird long time now, I'm really happy with it. GUI could be a bit nicer but that's about it..

  • ^^ +1 for mailplane

  • My old mbp 13" will do the job

It might die on you though, but I doubt it as the 13" isn't part of the 'impending logic board death' ones, though it's been a bit iffy. I reckon prop it up so it gets plenty of air and doesn't overheat and it'll be fine. No promises though, but price will be set accordingly.

  • If you don't mind lugging around the larger laptop, 15" matte over 13" glossy retina. Every tog I know complains about the new screens. One day they might have matte retina.

  • looks good. Thanks

  • My old mbp 13" will do the job (...) might die on you though

..thanks, but the issues you describe indeed sound like there could be a major problem.

  • If you don't mind lugging around the larger laptop, 15" matte over 13" glossy retina.

Will not be lugging the thing around much, so that's not an issue.
Just realised how sought-after / pricey the 2012 15'' matte MBPs are, as they're the last of a kind..
(there's the 2011 ones as well, but they're weaker, and also suffer from the logic board failures which Apple are servicing until February next year only, so...)

  • Why not get an old mac mini pimped up then, and decent monitor? That'll be easy to get on your budget.

  • I still have a soft spot for the Mini, shame the current ones are diabolical.
Are the CPU's desktop or laptop class? Just googled, it's Laptop, fuck that noise.
Go hack if you are brave, could easily build something decent for £500.

  • Anyone know how loud the current crop of MBPs and imacs get? Or are they passive cooled only?

  • ..yeah, was considering this, proper mac mini connected to one of the better (matte) cinema displays for example..
Thing is even though I won't need to lug the thing around very much I would really prefer a laptop instead of some setup that's fixed at my desk.

Was considering a hackingtosh-laptop as well, apparently it's quite a bit harder to do compared to desktops (which seem to be fairly easy to set up nowadays provided you have compatible parts), have to investigate further / find a hack-able laptop with a proper matte screen...
