• If you don't mind lugging around the larger laptop, 15" matte over 13" glossy retina.

Will not be lugging the thing around much, so that's not an issue.
Just realised how sought-after / pricey the 2012 15'' matte MBPs are, as they're the last of a kind..
(there's the 2011 ones as well, but they're weaker, and also suffer from the logic board failures which Apple are servicing until February next year only, so...)

  • Why not get an old mac mini pimped up then, and decent monitor? That'll be easy to get on your budget.

  • I still have a soft spot for the Mini, shame the current ones are diabolical.
Are the CPU's desktop or laptop class? Just googled, it's Laptop, fuck that noise.
Go hack if you are brave, could easily build something decent for £500.

  • ..yeah, was considering this, proper mac mini connected to one of the better (matte) cinema displays for example..
Thing is even though I won't need to lug the thing around very much I would really prefer a laptop instead of some setup that's fixed at my desk.

Was considering a hackingtosh-laptop as well, apparently it's quite a bit harder to do compared to desktops (which seem to be fairly easy to set up nowadays provided you have compatible parts), have to investigate further / find a hack-able laptop with a proper matte screen...
