  • When I was in NYC two years ago I wandered into a shop that was our equivalent of Carphone Warehouse, and bought for $90 + $30 one month top up a sim free phone. Totally painless android thing. Gave it to a friend after the month, still cheaper than O2 roaming.

    You must check your phone is set up for the type of radio bands (forget the correct word) that they use in the states. I'm not sure if all phones work everywhere, but they didn't before. Some of ours won't work with their sims, or so it used to be.

  • The majority of US mobile networks used to use CDMA rather than GSM. Since the advent of 3G most countries now use it, including the US, so it's much easier to use your existing phone when you travel.
