• Seeking advice from all you Macbook Pro experienced people - thanks in advance for any help!

Long story short I will be needing a (used) Apple laptop for less than £700 that is capable of dealing with 100-400MB photoshop files smoothly.

Want to avoid models that are affected by impending logic board death.
Want to be able to switch HDD to SSD if it doesn't already have one.
If I'm correct RAM isn't expandable since the 2012 models (but 8GB would be sufficient).
From what I've gathered so far my options are either a late 2012 13'' retina or a mid-2012 15'' non-retina - I guess a maxed out Air would be up to the task as well, but I would like to have more resolution.

Basically I'm mostly having a hard time deciding between a smaller retina screen or a bigger, matte, non-retina (always loved Apple's matte displays, and always found retina to be very very nice, but kind of awkward to edit photos on because of its weird, glossy 'artificialness' - not sure if this just takes getting used to - on the other hand it feels sort-of insane to buy a pre-retina macbook in this day and age).

Please point out things I'm missing / issues to be aware of when considering the above mentioned models.

    Thanks!

  • My old mbp 13" will do the job

It might die on you though, but I doubt it as the 13" isn't part of the 'impending logic board death' ones, though it's been a bit iffy. I reckon prop it up so it gets plenty of air and doesn't overheat and it'll be fine. No promises though, but price will be set accordingly.
