  • any tips on a front derailleur that's as high as it can go, but still hitting the 53t ring?

Try a 52? That would have been the default big ring back then, 2mm smaller radius than 53T

  • Cheers, that's really helpful.

  • Applying internal pressure to an area that's been damaged by excessive external pressure sounds like a bad idea.

  • FD question... Limit screws don't seen to be doing anything. I know it's me being an idiot but help..! I've been on Park Tool site, watched the videos... Still can't work out wtf... Even the local shop couldn't do it.
    (Campagnolo Athena)

  • Cable tension too tight? derailleur not aligned with chainring? tried the other limiter? (the latter isn't the same, some have it the other way round).

  • Will try other limiter... Otherwise all aligned @withered_preacher no not massively clean. Suppose I should clean it...

  • no, he was talking about a bream gun, and hoped you'd skate over it, but the rest of us knew you'd flounder

  • I want to buy new carbon forks but most seem to be 10mm taller (axle to crown) compared to my current ones. How much difference will 10mm make?

    Currently have these (395mm)..

Looking to upgrade to these (405mm)..

  • Sending stuff to Greece. Clothes and stuff.
    Best prices/fastest?

  • I'm sending to Greece. For Greeks. They won't fall for that one.

  • Just thinking aloud:

Has anyone hacked a derailleur to work with a 2 speed White industries duo sprocket? Is it even possible?

  • Is it even possible?

It's theoretically possibly, in the sense that it's perfectly feasible for an RD to work well shifting a two tooth difference somewhere in the middle of its range, but in most cases by the time you've lengthened the limit screws enough to provide stops at both ends, one or other of them will no longer be aligned with the stop surface they are supposed to act on.

It's pretty pointless exercise, once you've gone down the route of adding an RD, shift lever and cable, you might as well get a cassette hub and enjoy a decent range of gears, even if it's only 5 or 6 on a Hope Trials hub.

  • A brompton 2 speed hanger would be the best bet

  • So I managed to lock my Kryptonite Evolution Mini and pull the key out in a way, that the discs in the lock are misaligned and I can't reinsert my key.
My bike is now wonderfully locked at a subway restaurant and I can't unlock it.
I have tried flooding the lock with lubricant, wiggling, tapping, anything. Trying to realign the discs with a hairpin.. nothing.
Now my beloved bike is sleeping outside.

Any idea how to get this open? I have come to terms with the fact that I probably need a new lock, as my dad is trying to find a suitable bolt cropper, but I wouldnt like to resort to such methods...

  • That sounds odd. Can you not insert the key one disc at a time, rotating a little each time?
If you have a spare key, try that. It's possible that the key you use daily has become twisted, but that would cause a problem unlocking, not simply inserting the key...

  • I say that based on my experiences working with department store crap that my friends bring to me because the gears don't shift anymore.
A clean derailleur makes a huge difference.

  • I've had this with mine and just inset as far as it will go, turn till it aligns with the next disc and pops down more, twist till I find the next... Hope you sort it.

    Great shout! Thanks....

  • ..But as mdcc suggests...for the additional "stuff" that'd be required I may as well go for several gears. I guess I can always just use 5/6 gears from the cassette stack and jib the rest. A plus is simplicity of the wheel build; the Hope hub mentioned is symmetrical (no dishing). It'd be great to be able to use a thumb shifter with some like this:

Does anyone have any idea of the weight differences between the above:

Hope hub, 5 gears, a short cage derailleur and a thumb shifter/grip shifter

    Vs

An internal 3 speed hub with coaster brake?

  • Is running a 20c tyre on a 25c (319) rim on the road as stupid of an idea as I think it is?

  • Too much risk of exposed sidewall and damage to the rims (no pinch flat mean rims get the blunt of the impact).

    Beside the obvious that is.

  • If by 319 you mean the Mavic A319, the smallest I managed is 23c and that just about as far I would comfortably go.
