  • Went with the Cruds. They took some hacksawing/ bodging. There is eff all clearance but they fit.

Not sure if they will be any better than my racebladeXL, defo lighter.

  • Not sure if they will be any better than my racebladeXL.

It's better, just a little more annoying.

  • boohooo :(

  • Gilles Berthoud 60mm

  • mudguards:
    28 - 35
    any colour
    not fancy
    full protection

I have sks chromoplastics, I'm happy with them.
    Best price /better alternative?

Alternative: I need one x rear full mudguard to accommodate 28 -35 tyres.

  • chromoplastics in 45mm from bike24

  • Cheers.

  • Hmm, looks good, thanks. Would prefer black but these look better quality than the ETC. Any experience of mounting them? Reasonably straight forward? Need to work out if they'll fit under v-brakes...

  • @owl I have fitted a pair of the Berthoud 45mms for 26" wheels on my son's bike, fit under the V brakes perfectly well, easily an inch to spare. I doubt very much the 60mms have a much taller arc that would prevent you fitting #pleasedon'tblamemeifI'mwrong

  • Oh hang on, your tyres are massive ... hmmmm maybe you should call SJS, they sell these guards and know a lot about big tyres and what fits in what.

  • Best tool to cut mudguard stays?

  • Hacksaw or bolt croppers, then file off.

  • i dont have either; I need to buy .. which one?

  • If thick alu stays like pdw/VO/GB, get a hacksaw.

Everybody needs a half decent hacksaw.

Bit easier to do thin steel ones with bolt croppers - just be careful as the ends fly off and could go in your eyes.

And really do file off the cut ends, sharp mudguard stays are really bloody easy to hurt yourself on!

  • I'm looking for a similar kind of thing, at the moment. I'm thinking of the velo orange 26" stainless, which are very similar to the now discontinued Gilles Berthour longs. If you're not fussed about the extra length (it's only at the front) then plant X have 26" x 60mm for cheaps at the moment in the short version, which will be great unless you're running a front bag. It'd be nice if someone did something with a bit of extra breathing room for nobblies or super-fat slicks.

edit: my mistake, they did have them cheap, they've gone back up again.

  • This would solve my cable cutting need too .. hmmm

    next question .. 650b x 42mm tyre; 700c 45mm mudguards will work or not?

  • Badly. Is 45mm external

  • Ignore Chromoplastics and go for the Longboard.

Extremely long and actually keep your feet dry (as well as fellow riders).

  • Longboards are chromoplastic.

  • Hmm

    • there's a 38mm difference between the 2 rim sizes
    • the 45mm fenders are ideally used with a 33mm tire
That means the fender would be 19mm further from the rim than intended and the 42mm tire would close that gap by 4.5mm. You'd likely be able to still see some light between tire and fender, though it would certainly 'work'.
This assumes that both tires are as high as they are wide - a narrow rim would make it a bit taller.
This also assumes that you don't use heat to bend the fender to better match the 650B arc - this can end in tears.
  • Longboards are chromoplastic.

    Not the same mudguard.

  • Probably obvious to some, but here's something to bear in mind when installing steel mudguards (with homemade fittings). From the Gilles Berthoud team when I asked what went wrong with my cracked one above:

Probably one of the following problems, or a combination thereof:
Holes drilled too big and/or not deburred, creating a stress riser.
Holes in the fender not drilled in line with the holes in the bracket, which could mean the bolts apply stress to the fender.
Unadapted bracket with the wrong angle, applying stress on the fender. If the bracket is too flat or too round and stiff, it pulls the fender out of its radius and applies stress to it.
Fender installed with too much stress (from tweaking the radius too much)

  • Yeah pretty easy to install, just keep some extra bits n bobs to make sure you can get it to fit. Use a dremel (there's cheap 'fake' ones that do the job if you aren't gonna use it much) to cut the stays (@amey). And loctite!
