  • Same here!

Did not cook with eggs a lot before going vegan, but this is good news - so easy!

  • Shoutouts to Lazy Rubarb in Tulse Hill. Amazing vegan chocolate cake. If your ever in the area and just missed your train..

  • It was a lovely celebration of World Vegan Day up at Karamel on Sunday. Sunday roast, a great speech by Jasmijn de Boo, the Vegan Society CEO, and after that a totally barnstorming speech (which was long but which nobody wanted to end) by the awesome Fiona Oakes. So passionate, committed, and such a great attitude. She told about her world record marathon runs and the difficulties she encountered, including how she was censored by the BBC (who didn't want her to say that she was vegan, even though that was extremely important to her).

Then we watched Cowspiracy, a new documentary that makes the case that animal agriculture is a far bigger threat to the world's climate and cause of species extinction than any other factor. I don't know if the figures presented are true, must investigate, but it was convincingly made. It certainly leaves meat-eating 'environmentalists' no leg to stand on if they try to justify meat consumption on 'environmental' grounds , but of course that doesn't mean that it includes much of an ethical dimension. The problem is that even the film-maker's conversion to veganism during the film is not entirely convincing. It is caused by what I call 'depersonalised duty', in which people turn themselves into an instrument of a larger cause, but not from completely voluntary personal conviction. I do hope that he'll find a more complete motivation in due course. A very interesting watch, although an aesthetic warning is also in order, as it contains footage of distressing animal abuse, including killing.

All in all, a great day and evening, and definitely the best place for celebrating World Vegan Day considering that Louise, who invented World Vegan Day, is one half of the couple who run Karamel.

Make a mental note now to watch out for the next one in a year's time. :)

  • Kip Andersen has friends he high places and he's putting this information into the wider public arena (Cowspiracy is now on Netflix - thanks to Leo Dicaprio) - I've done quite a bit of digging and all the sources of the information are reputable. I agree on the conviction of going vegan - but the positive change which we are now seeing as direct response to the film is quite staggering. Not all the credit goes to this film - of course there are many others.

Sounds like a good day out - I must pop up to Karamel - sounds good. I celebrated with cake and a tree climb.

  • Yes, I was surprised to see DiCaprio's name in there, but it wasn't very hard to work out that that would have opened a few doors. I must admit I haven't noticed any change in relation to the film yet, but I've probably had my head in the sand. :)

  • And this just in:

Might be worth waiting a while until old stocks have been replaced. (I must admit I never liked Guinness much and won't be rushing to celebrate it being vegan, although obviously I'm in favour.)

  • Has anyone found a supermarket stocking the vegan Quorn yet? Cant find it anywhere in Southwark area.

  • Guinness is awful.

  • Has anyone found a supermarket stocking the vegan Quorn yet? Cant find it anywhere in Southwark area.

Can't help you there (I wouldn't buy it), but there is an argument that 'vegan' Quorn isn't really vegan. I'll let the Internet make that case. :)

  • Guinness is awful.

I must confess that I preferred it over John Smith's. :)

  • I went to Mestizo in Euston last night for a friends leaving party- probably the most extensive vegan menu I've ever seen at a non-vegan restaurant, so much so that I was a little overwhelmed. Super clued up staff too, highly recommended

  • Went there recently, totally by accident, amazing range of vegan stuff, and really good as well (there's so much mediocre Mexican stuff around).

Looked at the interwebs and Vegan Quorn is only at Asda until the new year, then they're rolling it out around the others. Only two products to begin with - a spicy burger and pieces. Not bothered about internet conspiracists, if it says vegan on the packet, that's good enough for me. You can tie yourself in ethical knots until you're eating nothing.

  • Don't know if there's anybody from Bavaria in this thread, but wanted to pass on the info -
performing artist / spiritual activist / vegan cook / yoga teacher and allround super nice person Karo Tak does a vegan cooking workshop in Munich this weekend.
    Much recommended!

  • performing artist / spiritual activist / vegan cook / yoga teacher

This is the kind of shite that gives veganism a bad name - get in the sea, 'spiritual activist'.

  • I think it's crackbrained remarks like this that are giving you a bad name, seriously.

get in the sea, 'spiritual activist'

..ironically, she is an active supporter of Sea Shepherd

  • Me too, but perfectly happy for 'spiritual activist performance artists' to be hunted with harpoons. Either for scientific research or shits and giggles.

  • "So Ham"?
    "Buttermelcher"?

  • hunted with harpoons

And I thought you'd go for knights lancing them.

  • Not bothered about internet conspiracists, if it says vegan on the packet, that's good enough for me.

Careful in Vietnamese restaurants, though, in which usually the entire 'vegetarian' menu consists of dishes made with fish sauce. :)

  • Its on ASDA'S website at the moment... with no picture. Just search Quorn or go to a fuck off ASDA. I wouldn't buy it either..

  • Actually going to a Vietnamese place tonight - will make sure to check (or, if I'm really hungry, just won't ask)...

  • Ha. The serving staff will most likely not be aware of it and if you ask for the fish sauce to be replaced with soya sauce usually you'll get a dish without either. That's not necessarily a problem, as there will be soya and chilli sauces on the table, but it will probably be vegetables cooked without any spicing (the only flavour is often the fish sauce) and won't be very tasty--at least that's been my experience four times out of the last five. Hopefully, it'll be a place with more unusual veggie dishes that don't follow that simple formula!

  • Well, it's in Camden, so they're probably used to dealing with us weirdo vegan spiritual activist types (does spit count as an animal product?) Worst cases scenario is exchange taste for fire and whack in a load of chilli sauce.

  • Apparently only avaiable in Asda and Waitrose so far, hope that helps you narrow your search.
